Author Topic: Aces High II, a Christmas Present (Read 601 times)

Hey all, I'm not currently a member of the Aces High community, but I have some questions about it I'm hoping you all can help me with. First, let me give a bit of back story.

My father and I used to play a game, which some of you probably know, called Air Warrior. We were both very into this game, him very much so, and it eventually lost its online host and faded away into gaming history (in so much as an online game). Since, he has not really found a game he enjoys playing, and I think it's unfortunate. Online games like AW and the communites they presented can be a god send for old timers like my dad

So pretty much what I'm asking is, and I'd particularly like to hear from those who may have player AW, is Aces High similar? He loves WWII aviation history, and one of the things he really liked was the detail of the planes, the fact that they strove to make them as realistic as possible. It seems Aces High also strives for the same goal.

But how is the online play? From the size of these boards, it seems it's doing quite well in numbers. Is there a good variance in play types, something for everyone? Feel free to give me some of your input on your favorite aspects of Aves High if you are so inclined, the more info the better. From what I've seen so far, I think this game could really give my father back some of the enjoyment he lost when AW said goodbye. It's something for us to play together again as well.

1st impressions are also misleading. The game has so much more to offer beyond what you first think of it.

sound/graphic settings, gameplay, flying skills, controller setup.

Once you've set the game up to the best of its capabilities and you start living the dream you and your dad will be addicted for life.

I highly recomend you try it out. You can be sure that your dad will enjoy the game alot too. As birddog mentioned there is a 14 day free trial and you _will_ get hooked during those days.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm thinking this is a go for Christmas this year. The more I think and read about it, the more excited I get...haha. It's been a long time since I had a nice dog fight.

I flew AW from the first days it was on AOHell...never did the "by the hour" on Genie as Im sure it would have cost me a fortune

Came here 2 weeks before AWIII was shut down, tho I did fly the last night AW was on just for old time sake.

The graphics here are better than AW ever hoped to be, and game play has more to offer. Not only is there a stong Air battle going here there is a very stong ground war going on at most time as well.

The biggest problem in the switch over is if you had only flown in the RR arenas in AW you will have a hard time adjusting to the flight model at first. There are NO RR arenas in AH. Get with a trainer to help you get your stick set-up, and then have at it! Other than that, I think its a great Christmas present.

Stick......imho I wouldn't invest a great deal of money in a stick. Don't buy a cheap one mind you but just get a reliable stick. For starters if you can find an X45 that prolly would work.

Lots of us...and I mean lots have the HOTAS setup complete. Joystick, Throttle and Pedals. In the long run CH Products widely are considered the best for their reliability and length of service. CH Products cost more and as I said above....don't just yet invest a ton of money in controllers until you see if it is worthwhile to you.

X45 btw is made by Saitek I believe, X52 is also but is a bit more expensive.
You might be able to pick one up on EBay for a resonable price. For CH Products I've found Provantage.com has the best prices.

Interesting... I have been looking at the X45 and was wondering if anyone here used it.

Id love some input on if folks are happy with it but ill prolly start a new thread.

I have an X45 with CH Pedals. Until they come up with something better I won't switch. (Even have a spare X45 just in case this one goes).

I flew Air Warriors from 1996 (the AOL days) until AW3 shut down then migrated here. AH2 is very similar but light years beyond AW in graphics, plane modeling, game play and almost any aspect you can think of. If you were an AW fan you won't be disappointed. In fact, your addiction may be stronger. As a plus, most of the controls are similar as well which will cut down the learning curve.

As to sticks I'm still using the same MS Sidewinder that I started with over 10 years ago.

Flew AW from 1994 till the end. This is the closest thing I've found to replace it. My advice would be not to expect this to be exactly like AW. For me, AW will always be "the best", but then again it's the 1st game I ever really got into. A lot of guys from AW have migrated here and I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

You cant beat the online play. This is most likely the most realistic WWII Flight Sim. out there. Aces High is well worth the money. You can go anywhere on any map and find a good fight. Any fight from Tanks to Bombers at 25K+. All the vehicles, planes, boats, ships, carriers, fields, buildings, factorys, trees, horizons, water, puffy ack, bomb craters, guns, engines, air raids, and bomb whistle look and sound as real as possible. On Aces High, if someone gives you a flyby, you know it. Every plane/vehicle has its own sounds. You cant beat Aces High as a christmas gift, your father will love it!
