Help w/ P47s
« on: December 11, 2006, 09:16:19 AM »
I try to fly all the planes, and i take upon myself to try and learn them to be able to fly most of them atleast half decently, still learning...

But there is one series of planes that evades me...the P47s

I can't fly those worth a chit, i think of all the sorties i've flown in p47s, i've only gotton one victoy, it was over a N1K2-J in a P47D-25, and that was a rly rough dogfight, even though i started w/ like a 2k alt advantage, y if it weren't for the P47s ability to dive like a freakin' comet i would of died for sure.

Anyways I have fought some good p47 pilots and i have great respect for there ability. I'd like to be able to fly the P47 too, though i kno nvr as well as them, i'd like to learn to fly it atleast good enough to get a few kills in it.

So ANY help on how to best fly or how to start learning to fly the P47, particularly the P47D-11 (luv early to midwar planes, and t3h razrback is c kewl lookin') as well as the others (cuz in sum rooms earlywar ain't gonna cut it) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and patience.

I occasionally dable in the the jugs, but im not a specialist in them by any means. But you have to firstly realise its not really a stall-fighter, never will be, so unless you have no other alternative, just dont try it. The jugs shine up high. The D40 has better climb rate than a D-mustang above 11k, and just seems to handle nicer. Its instantaneous turn rate is very good and it seems to hold E very well up high even through short-duration high-G turns. Just keep a good head of steam up and keep the fight nice and fast, and the jug will give a good account for itself.
Learn its weaknesses too. Its not a stall-fighting tail-chaser! Its outclassed by a lot of crates below 10k, and she's not the fastest. It will never compete in climbing contests with nearly anything either. Zoom climbs are another matter tho.
The D11 is the most nimblest, and the fastest D model on the deck; but its the worst climber of all the Jugs. The razor back obscures your view a bit too.
The D40 is the best climber of all the jugs, and turns fairly well compared to the N model.
The N is the fastest hands down, and has *HUGE* range. The D40 outclasses the N in the climb/accleration contest, but i find the N is the more "survivable" jug. The range on it allows you time to engage when you are good and ready, and slip away to reposition and re-enter the fray at will many times over. Ive landed 12 kill single-flight sorties in the N model doing this.

With the jug you really need to be able to engage when you're ready (eg got some smash and/or alt) and pick your fights to maximise your sucess rate. Its not the best at saving your butt if you stuff up, so get it right up-front (mind you thats good advice for any a/c). Try find the fights up high where the jug is in its element. As a last ditch move, a power-dive to the deck can be useful dislodge enemies or cause them to auger if you time it right - follow it up with a low-G zoom climb and a hammerhead reversal and spank the floundering idiot below you with those 8x50cal 'shredders' :D This works brilliantly against japper planes like the Niki and Kis etc, not so well against a spit 16 tho. 109s and P38s if they're dumb enough will just auger, so you wont have to worry about a hammerhead.

I set my convergence in the jug at 350 - all 8 at 350.

The Jug is a decent enough ride. However, in AH conditions, it has nothing really outstanding to offer. With planes that have a distinct feature such as: High speed, superb turning ability, heavy cannons, excelent climb, you can develop a solid tactic that fits most situations. The other "all around" planes are less favoured in the areanas and are harder to handle since you have to adapt.

It has its own in and outs, cute little tricks, but over all it is much more up to the pilot to adapt to the other plane+pilot than it is about exploiting your unique plane ability to the max. There is no "do this to win that situation" with the jug. I find it more fun and challanging that way.

The only tip I'd give that always work for the jug is - manage your fuel. It has a crazy fuel burn rate and the weight difference is more significant than with almost any other plane. Use DT, reduce throttle and RPM while cruising, plan on RTB at economic settings. This will help you extend the "quality" last minutes where you are light and manuverable. This perhaps is the most important variable in jug's performance.

to truly learn the jug's potential you have to fly in the cockpit of the very best jug pilots. there are many that i probably dont remember that stopped playing, but of the current players you wont find any better P47 pilots than the ranks of Nomde's 56th Fighter Group.

i would strongly suggest talking with yucca or blukitty before you think you can claim to know the P47 inside out.

The key with the jug is patience. You can't just go barreling in without good SA and an even better plan for an escape route. This is not very conducive to the Counter Strike, "Must have action immediately" mentality so prevalent in the MA's. I think it gets underutalized for just this reason. You need to take the time to get some alt, and in this ride that's more time then normal, and then pick your engagements wisely. Conserve your E and then bug out before you blow it all.

Use them flaps i find them more usefull in the N
can dive like a comet,, but can lose speed like a rock I find this very helpful in some fits
Use the rope I love ropping
Qwick kills  in 1v1, lost a good fight in AVA cause my gunnerywas off, in other situations your usually making high speed passes withsometimes great angles

Lighten up your load and you'll be amazed at what the jug can do.

1st I never take more than a half tank of fuel and then I add the center line drop tank.

2nd But the most important IMHO take the smaller ammo package.

Try this test yourself and you'll see a huge difference in handling. On your first sortie take the heavy 8 gun package. Then on the next sortie take the same plane but take the lightest small 6 gun package with the least ammount of ammo.

You'll see what I mean after you try it. Once you loose all that weight from all that ammo that you don't really need you will find you can really get the jug to float like a kite. And it will surprise you and your opponent.
