Lancaster perk option
« on: December 11, 2006, 12:50:11 PM »
I want to see the Lancaster B1 Specials which could carry the 21 foot long 12,000 lb "Tallboy" or 25.5 foot long 22,000 lb "Grand Slam" "earthquake" bombs. This required modification of the bomb-bay doors which would make this a perfect 2nd Lancaster perk option.  With appropriate blast radius of course.  These were used primarily to take out hardened targets (such as HQ in AHII) late in the war.

Also of course in order to make proper use of the "earth quake" effect the lanc had to drop said Tallboy or Grand Slam from in excess of 18,000 feet above target...................

Which is just fine as thats where I always fly my Lancs.  Of course getting there with the extra payload may take a little longer.

I think this is a great idea... we need more things to do with bomber perks.

I'd like a larger bomb here and there, for strat and such (if it wouldn't do any damage to a field, or some sort of compromise), but HTC has said they won't model any bomb larger than the 4k "cookie" already in-game. I guess we'll just have to wait for the B29 where we get the same bombs -- just a HELL of a lot more of them! (20,000lbs of ord, I'm thinking 20x 1000lb bombs?)

Lanc could carry two 4000 lb cookies plus a few (I think 4) 500's in between.

It *could*.. but did it, regularly? The bomb loads we have in AH are the representative, "common", loads found on regular bombers.

Yeah but having perkable loads would make flying buffs more fun...

ATM a pony carries more than 30% of  b17.....

Just my opinion mind you

There is no point

Surely there is little or no point in having such a massive bomb without a suitable target e.g. a bunker or sub pen?

Model the Tirpitz, with far too much ack to ever come in below 20k, and torpedo fences to prevent low-alt suicide torp runs. THAT would be pretty damn cool :)

Or hydro dams.

What other targets were they used on?

Submarine pens, viaducts (Beilefeld springs to mind) and tunnels.

Beilefeld was a nice hit -
After 1000's and 1000's of lbs of normal bombs it took one Grandslam to topple it.

The hardened building at HQ would be the prime target.  I think you'd see more single pilot runs at it which, in turn, would make 163's viable more often.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAH AHH!!!

WTF war did you study boy?

Re-read the loadouts for the buffs we have in this game.. you will find that most of them carry between 1 to 5k more then they did consistently in reality.

Yes Krusty it was a fairly regular load out.

Note the 2 x 4000lb cookies were infact bolted together to form an 8000lb cookie.

Ponies rarely, if ever, carried 2X1000lbs. in combat even thought they could.  A 6,000lb bomb load was the norm for the B-17 going deep into Germany.  If they were only going to France from England, they could have carried more...
