video stutter during rolling maneuvers
« on: December 12, 2006, 01:20:41 AM »
My frame rates are pegged at the monitor's 60fps max, but when I roll my Spit 16 quickly in Aces High I see about six very minor stutters during 360 degrees of fast roll. This surprises me because when I roll in MSFS 2004, it's smoother than a diva's behind. Are there any processes which might affect Aces High that don't affect another flight sim? Any suggestions on where to start? The stuttering is minor for most eyes, but it bugs me because it reminds me that I'm flying a sim instead of a real plane. I just upgraded from another computer and the slight stuttering was present on that computer as well.

CPU Core2Dual 6400
MB: Abit AB9 Pro
Memory: 2GB OCZ 800 (set at recommended 5-5-5-12)
Video Card: Nvidia EVGA 7900GT
Video Drivers Nvidia 4.16.10
Sound: In MB, Realteck AC'97
Thx!

If you are using the NVidia 9x.xx driver series, you probably will have problems as you described.  The 84.xx drivers should help.  The NVidia version number is the last 4 numbers of the version number in DXDIAG (Start->Run->DXDIAG), under the "Display" tab.

It could also be an interrupt conflict with the USB port and another data demanding device, such as the network card.

In the game's "Video Settings", check the option to "Preload textures into system RAM".  Do not check the skins preload option!

Flash, it depends.  If you have all the skins available, then you should not check the "preload skins" option.  With all the skins loaded, your computer would need about 3GB of RAM to keep from swapping.

If you have a small subset of skins loaded and disable the background loading of skins in the game, then you might be able to get away with preloading the skins and not swap a lot.

I'll try the suggested driver. FYI, the problem seems somewhat intermittent because today the stutter went away. I'll give the new driver a try and report back. Thx!

Here's a clue: the stuttering only happens when I am flying offline. If I go online the rolling is fluid, even in a nasty dogfight. I tried 3 different arenas offline, and they all produced a slight stuttering. I'm holding off changing video drivers just yet so that I can address one issue at a time. Any thoughts?

Skuzzy, I've had similar stuttering problems during maneuvers so checked the DXDIAG.  I've got an nVidia GF 6800 in a Dell XPS/WinXP and the last four digits of the version number are 7777.  Can/should I load the 84.xx drivers?
