Turn the wind on please - at ground level
« on: December 13, 2006, 03:51:26 PM »
What with all the changes and talk of the game as a game or simulation, it reminded me of one day when AHII was in Beta stage and I am certain the wind was turned on at gound level.

It was really good fun because one runway would be into wind and of no real effect to usual. But the other runways (other than the same runway other end) would be cross wind. I played around for ages using the crab technique and kick off drift to land. Or the wing low slip across wind style. Certainly lining up pointing down the runway wings level had you drifting off to one side.

So Hitech, why not switch it in as I have never noticed it since it came out of Beta.

Regards

I agree having the ability to practice cross wind landings would be great

Blagard: The auto takeoff can not handle the crosswind take off. And you can practice them offline.

Why not turn off auto takeoff instead?

Hitech,

Thanks for that prompt reply.

I never have bothered with auto takeoff so it was never apparent to me. But now I appreciate the problem.

It would be interesting to know how many players need auto takeoff but I think I'll leave that angle for another day when the current wave of changes have had time to settle one way or another ;-)

Regards.

kvuo75,

I do similar but take off manually, turn to set heading, then autoclimb mode.

As shown in the Coral Sea scenario, ground level winds also play havoc with LVT starts off the CVs.  At spawn, the LVTs move with the wind and won't engage the gears if they are moving.  Spent alot of time floating waiting to hit landfall :rofl

Niteflyr

If you have ever landed crosswind real or in Aces High you would appreciate it requires additional skill / technique to deal with it.

I love thermals, I used to Glide (Sailplanes and Hang Gliders), even used them to improve the climb rate in a C152!. But to be honest they don't have a significant impact to challange your flying skills (Violent Thermals excepted!) Anyway if you are going for thermals you have to the sink as well!

Oddly I have noticed that we occassionally do get very low cloud in the game with higher ground actually being in it.

John9001's Autokill, yep I need that to as personal favour from HT, but I don't think he should let the rest of you have it :p

I never used auto take off I thought it was a cheasy unrealistic thing to use and turned it off when I first downloaded AH1.

Though I am always surprised how many people rely on it...
