Pizza Hut pizza with stuffed crust... Enough to make me hate all things even remotely Italian in origin, for months on end. It's been 3 years since I ordered from Pizza Hut, and I'm still not to fond of Chianti.

Back when I managed a Mercedes repair shop one of the mechanics, who is Mexican, would bring in breakfast tortas that his mom would make at home.  They consisted mainly of eggs, cheese, bacon, and nopalito (skinned, sliced, and cooked cactus) or some variation of those ingredients.  Being told this I was very skeptical of how it would taste.  It turns out that nopalito became one of my favorite mexican food specialties.

sausage gravy has to be made out of a cast iron skillet. It just doesnt taste as good made out of anything else. Kinda has a flat taste to it. Just made some over the weekend. After a few good sized helpings and half gallon of milk I couldnt move very well. Slipped into a nice food coma and didnt wake up till morning.

I was an exchange student.  I was in Bahia while traveling with a few other exchange students and a few locals.  Never made it to Brasilia -- avoided Rio de Janiero like the plague (host familiy was afraid I would be kidnapped) -- but did manage to see Sao Paulo, Oro Preto, Belo Horizonte, Slavador and many points in between in my travels.

But I "lived" in Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul, where I became well acquainted with the Churrasco.  Unlike the cuisine discussed in this thread, I strongly encourage any carnivore to find a good Brazilian Churrascaria (there are a few in the States).  Nothing quite like having huge chunks of various meats brought to your table on a spit - over and over and over - until the buttons pop off your shirt.:aok

That's great! I remember some exchange students back in '64 and '65 in Fortaleza. That's where I lived just before I moved back to the US. I hadn't been back to Brasil since then until Sept, 05 when I met my fiancee' back in Fortaleza. We had been sweethearts there in the early 60's.

Thanks for the reply :)

Mark

P.S. Forgot to mention that Fort Worth has a pretty good Churrascaria called Texas do Brazil.

We have a Fogo de Chão here in Houston but I have yet to go to it.  Sounds like I should.

I can't think of any particular grouse and disgusting food item at the moment, but usually it comes from a country near by: Mexico. Each time I have to spend hours on a chair hoping my internal organs will not explode after a visit to their style of garbage-eater for money, aka. restaurant. No wonder their country is so messed up, just look at what kind of poise they call food. And I'm not a picky eater; I enjoy sushi, fish-eggs, and such. But Mexican food is just sickening.........

That looks like it might be a good place to eat. I would hate for you to not at least try it. I have not been to one that was bad, they all were good, but some are better than others just like any restaurant. If you drink try a Caipirinha ;)  It is made with Cashasa, an alcoholic drink made from sugar cane, a distant cousin to rum.

Careful with those -- drink a couple sitting down, you won't realize they have knocked you on your rump until you stand up and promptly fall on it . . .

A "Caipivodka" will do in a pinch if you can't find Cashasa.  ;)

Reminded me of another "bad food" moment . . . desperate for more alcohol, and short of limes, a buddy tried to make a Caipivodka using tangerines as a substitute.  The result was less than stellar . . .

I think that would be a caipiroska IIRC.  anyways far too sweet for my liking but they are very popular drinks.  if they offer a feijuada on saturdays I recommend to try it but be sure you can take a nap afterwards. :D

I know we called it Caipivodka, but I wouldn't doubt if there are regional variations of the name (think Soda vs. Pop).

Ahhhh . . . . Feijoada . . . . :aok   Never quite understood the usually accompanying Farofa, though.  Too much like adding sawdust to me.

The farófa is an aquired taste but my kids like it and they have never been to Brasil. It is best on top of the feijoada that is best on top of rice :aok

When were you down in Brasil Storch?

Salvador, Bahia was the farthest north I got.  Never got to see the Amazon at all either.  Then again, 90% of the Brazilians I knew hadn't seen it either.

As much as I've enjoyed the hijack -- I think it is well past bedtime for me.  Maybe I can catch you in the arenas later this week and we'll trade stories. :aok

One last food item -- the north seemed to prefer the chick peas over black beans.  Black beans, I love.  Chick peas, not so much.  Especially not when made into a curd and deep fried in palm oil . . . oh my!  Full circle! ;)
