Dumps or freezes
« on: December 08, 2000, 02:08:00 PM »
hi all,
bought a new pc and cant get ah run stable for a longer period of time. it either dumps me or freezes.
im running now a amd900 on an asus a7v, sb live, gf2ultra, 128mb sd133.
if i have full hw acceleration ah dumps me after a short period of time (both on/offline). if i reduce it one notch, i get an occassional freeze.
tried all suggestions found here and on other bbs for the last 3 weeks. nada...

i dont play many games, only sometimes panzer elite. that one runs fine so far.
pretty frustated and clueless right now.. anyone got some weird tips..i'll try em

Hey Xela,
The only thing I would ask is, have you got the latest drivers for everything. (I know it's a new PC but new drivers can be found almost on a daily basis). Also which version of Direct X are you running. Really DX7a is the safe minimum even DX8 (Not the Beta) now seems stable enough. It amazes me just howmany "New" PC's still get shipped with DX 7.0 or even 6.1. Assuming everything is upto date I think your looking at possibly an IRQ conflict (Out of my level of understanding I'm afraid). I'm sure someone will jump in though.

yes all the newest drivers. then for the nvidia most known stable dirvers since 5.33, about 4 of them. but always the same thing happens. dx7a ok. the only irq shared is between pci5 and usb controller; agp, sound, isdn card all have their own.
maybe power supply is too weak, but that wouldnt be limited to ah only, so i think its ok (300w).

since u running amd u might need this updated drivers for the via chipset:
 http://www.via.com.tw/drivers/index.htm

pick the 4 in 1 drivers and dowload them easy to install just winzip them and run the setup program.

after done that do the same thing with the new agp driver 4.04. this might help u out.
I`ll bet my bellybutton that ure new pc is coming with the old viachipset drivers that are pretty unstable.

i still get lockups but very seldoms now

Thanks all, but I already tried the newest drivers. That alone wouldnt change a thing.
However, found an old HT post here and did what he suggested. Disabled AGP and leaving HW accerleration at 1 notch from full, that sure did stop dumps to desktop completely, just having some very few hard freezes.. which I dont mind after all of this

Another think i noticed is that if im leaving the pc on for long time and the power saver is shutting down the pc i usually get dumped.
then again if just restarts the pc before running AH i dont get dumped lol. Dont know why but it seem to help to restart it and getting a "fresh" start.
