We all have our special New Year's observations, but Aces Highers around the world probably have some of the most unusual.

Superstitious or not, traditional or not, what is the most special thing you do every year to mark the passing of the old year and the beginning of the new year?

There is always much rejoicing in the RTR household on New Years day! It's such a happy and festive time for the family:)

I recall walking back to the piers I think it was in naples italy at or around midnight on new years eve and people started tossing stuff out of their homes, not small stuff either I'm talking furniture, pots and pans that kind of stuff. what's up with that? in puerto rico people toss pails of water out into the street. we have a tradition of eating 12 grapes one at every stroke of the clock, supposedly for good luck.

One of the traditions I remember best is a United Airlines pilot, since dead from cancer in his 50s, who always brought out a trumpet and played, not great but enthusiastically, Auld Lang Syne.

In my country, we do a lot of fireworks, eat good food, watch a certain TV program, smoke cigars and get pi$$ed

Last year I wandered around the neighborhood in my underwear trying to find my bed. I found it at county next morning.

Just read something about latin people wearing red undies to bring them love in the new year. Vaguely remember something else about the first food you eat in the new year supposed to bring something ... indigestion?

Traditionaly first food eaten on New Years Day Kielbasi and Sauerkraut to bring you luck. Think my Grandparents brought that one over from Germany.

Eating the above brings me luck...really does.... but pity those in the same room with me a few hours later:aok

Yeah, we have the 12 grapes during the clock strokes here in Spain. That's after a very copious dinner. Then people either:
1. Stay at home watching a 3 hours TV special recorded one month ago where they were pretending it was already the new year and all kinds of "stars" perform in glorious playback.
2. Dress and go out to an overpriced party and get as drunk as you can until 8AM, then find somewhere to breakfast steaming hot chocolate and churros (think of extremely greasy deep fried doughnuts)

When you get up in the New Year it's almost mandatory to watch both the Strauss Vals concert from Vienna and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski jumping on TV, even if you never go to concerts or care at all about ski jumping.
