Yo fellaz
Was wonderin if someone could tell me when the 109G-14 first started reaching front line units.I cant seem to pin it down in the books I have.I am building a 1/48 scale model of one and depending on when it entered service could impact how I paint it and what markings might have been used.Any other relevent info would be appreciated.

The G-14 entered squadron service with with II./JG 11 and Stab./JG 53 in July 1944.

To continue this research a bit......I read that the RLM ordered new paint to be used around the time the g14 entered service.They switched to the 81,82,83 paints.Now from what Ive read it took some months to actualy implement this and it took some time to use up old stocks of 74,75,76.Also it seems the Balkenkruz went through some changes.It was originaly black "or maybe a dark green sometimes from what ive read" with a white outline to a stricty white skeleton outline on top of the wing and a black skelton outline on the bottom.Now from pictures ive seen it seems the earlier style was still used later in the war.Its almost as if they were painting whatever stencles they may have had on hand on the planes.

So if I do a early g-14 im thinkin painting it 74,75,76 maybe mottel the sides a bit with 02.Now for a plane that was used in the Normandy campaign would I be able to use either balkenkruz or did the Skeleton types come along later in the year?

I did a G-14 skin for JG 53 (Alfred Michel's - 16./JG 53 - Blau 2 Wrk. Nmbr. 462892 Shot down Jan '45 by Allied AAA during Operation Bodenplatte)-

The other G-14 I did is Bf 109G-14 Wrk. Nmbr. 465548 as photographed by an Ami soldier at Neubiberg...

Both should be in game under the nic of 'Wotan'.

By this time most staffel / gruppe / geschwader emblems were left off aircraft.

RLM banned the use of 74 / 75 in favor of 81 / 82 in late Aug '44.

Most of the factories producing 109s continued using the old colors until they ran out of stock. Most of the aircraft were assembled from pre-painted parts. This why you sometimes see mixes of various paint combinations on the late 109s. Not to mention the fact that many field units also re-camouflaged planes according to what they felt was necessary or had on hand. You can see this among Fw 190 Schlacht units for example (most Fw 190 Fs were still in the old RLM 74/75 camo).

There is no general rule for RLM colors late in the war. Basically you'd need specific data on the plane you wish to paint to make any plausible comments. Even then the tones and variations of the colors are as numerous as there were people mixing the paint. There is plenty of room for variations and 'artistic expression'.
