I found a model of a 79 squadron spitfire ix and was wondering if its accurate or if its been done or being done for AH.

if it is a correct one and not being done would you have any more info kicking about.

As always Dan a big thankyou for your continous help in these matters [/IMG]

Hey Roger, I have a picture of that exact plane.

Morotai Island, 1945. The pic you posted is not accurate.

79 sqdn spits had 2 tone green camo on the upper surfaces. It does have the all white tail, but there is no fin flash. (If it did, it wouldn't have the red). I also have a colour plate of the emblem.

If you want I can scan them and send them too you.

Cheers.

Yep, no fin flash.  That's standard RAF ETO not RAAF in the PTO.

Kev did this 79 Squadron bird for me before the new Spits arrived.  The pilot, Barney Newman had been a Spit XII pilot with 41 Squadron on Spit XIIs.  He was killed in a Spit VIII August 8, 1945 when he went down to flak in the Halamera (sp) islands.

The Newman family lost 2 of their 3 boys, all who served in the RAAF.  Barney went down in the Spit 8.  And another brother went down as the pilot of an RAAF Beaufighter.  The third surviving brother was a Boston gunner.

If you want a 79 Squadron bird, I'd love to have this one done on the correct Spit 8

Looks pretty good (you already mentioned camo not lining up).

Don't forget the panel lines and rivets on the h-stabs!

The way you have the right hand side markings is correct.

Very Nice Roger

You might want to get Dan to post the original pics of UP-S.
'If' I remember correctly the fonts used for the codes are not standard RAF ones.
They are very narrow and the "S" in particular you will probably have to do freehand.

The picture of Barney Newman's bird.  Note where the camo goes on the nose.  It doesn't go down on to the tropical air filter underneath.

Thanks for taking it on :)

Just so you know.  This is Barney Newman, on the wing of a Spit VIII of 79 Squadron.

Thought I remembered them (correctly) being non RAF fonts.
Nice to know my mind hasn't gone totally. (But I'm working on it).

Looks like white gun port patches also.
