Got a 20.1" LCD monitor for Xmas
I can actually read the guages on the 109 and 190s now

which is the better cable to use
VGA or DVI-D?

and whats the difference?

DVI. Difference is DVI is digital, VGA is analog. Unless your video card sucks, DVI should give you a better picture.

The only real downside of DVI is that you will have to adjust the picture (color, brightness, etc) using the video card settings instead of adjustments using the monitor menu. That's a good thing for some people, a bad thing for people with monitors that need a lot of tweaking to get a good image.

But DVI should overall give a better image.

VGA is analog, DVI is digital. DVI is newer, so I suspect it's better.

thats what I figured.
Dunno if its going ot work the same with a DVI cable attacked ans the current VGA butthe monitor actually adjusted itself to my current video card settings.

Centered the picture, adjusted the brightness all by itself as soon as the computer booted up and again when I cheged the resolution settings
Which was pretty cool.

almost feel like doing it again just to watch it LMAO

thing I found odd was in game.
with the new monitor and Higher Res settings. I changed over to the Hi Rec pack, upped the texture and in game res and then even upped some of my video detail settings in game and didnt notice a very big frame rate drop.
which I thought odd. but I aint complaining

The signal from your vid card is digital. When it goes out the VGA adapter, it's converted to analog. Then when it's received by a digital monitor (like a LCD) it's reconverted into digital.

Mind you we're talking very small fractions of a second, but why even bother? Using the DVI cable skips the conversion to and from analog.

As for picture quality? Meh, I've not noticed anything super special about it. Then again, I haven't tried it with the analog cable.

With LCD monitor its best if you switch to exactly the resolution the display has. If you dont then you loose quality. Also, since it is exactly defined where which point on the display is there is no more adjusting if the signal is digital.

The DVI-D cable transmits the signal in digital, which gives better display quality since you save the digital-analog and the analog-digital conversion.

On a side note, the DVI standard also defines analog cables (i think its DVI-A) but nobody uses them. The port on the graphic card usually provides both signals, the digital and the analog. The adapters that you can plug on the DVI port that give you an vga port on the other side do NOT change the digital signal but connect the analog signal which is given from the card. There are also DVI ports which are purely digital, you cant plug in the Digital - Analog "converter" on those.

i got a 22in monitor for christmas and the best thing i have found to do is
I set my monitor to 1280 x 1024 in and out of the game.
turned down the gamma a bit in and out of the game.
and you may try adjusting the contrast a bit also.
my picture is crisp an clear.

LOL its beyonod just crisp and clear.

I only thought I could aim for specific parts of a plane before.

Picture quality is outstanding.

I used to not be able to read exactly how high I was in a 109 or 190 without zooming in. the color contrast between for example the number 10 which is grey. against the slightly lighter gray background to me made it look almost like a blob and next to unreadable unless I really stared at it.

Now I can see "ok Im at 11K"

The Dials are fine. It was the numbers 10,20 etc I couldnt read

But man I love this thing.
