Win2K, DX8a probs
« on: March 20, 2001, 10:16:00 AM »
AH has worked well for me on W2K, but when 6.0 came out I installed DX8a in order to get around the inability to start AH. Now here's the problem:

I will be flying along, and suddenly AH closes and I am back to my desktop. Roger Wilco is still functioning, which indicates the internet connection is still good. Everything else about the desktop is normal, but I get booted from AH on a regular basis, approx. after every 1-2 hours of flying.

Yesterday I had a different prob: While flying AH I had a core memory dump. Wow! What a deal.

Any suggestions would be appreciated:
PIII 600mhz
3DFX V5 5500 video
256 mb 133mhz memory
Abit AX6 rev2 MB
Sound Blaster Live
DSL internet via ethernet connection

Check for latest Abit bios, they are good about putting out new ones.

Latest Voodoo Drivers (naturally)

Reinstall DX8

Defrag
Shut off all other programs in background before starting AH

Try again.

Just put a Radeon 32 DDR card in to replace the Voodoo5 card. Will let all know if this solves the problem. If not, will update the bios, etc.

BTW, looks like ATI finally has a decent driver for Radeons on W2K. I just installed driver 5_13_01_3102 and frame rates are good and I can shift-tab in and out of AH flawlessly.

Be sure that you have RW set for "Wav" recording.  RW does not get along with DX8 when using Direct Sound recording.

If that doesn't work, remove RW.  Grab the latest RW, and re-install it, then try installing DX8a again.  That will sometimes clear it up.

Oh, and be sure you have the latest possible sound card drivers.  I was getting BSOD's in Win2k after playing games until I updated my SBLive drivers recently.

Thanks for that last post man.  I've been having problems with RW in AH ever since I did a system rebuild a month or so ago.  Never thought Direct Recording could be the problem.  AH will startup and run is real smooth but once I quit AH I have to restart computer to get AH to run again.  Not totally sure RW Direct Recording is the culprit but I'll bet on it.

BTW, whenever I quit AH I get an error having something to do with DDhelp and or GDI or something like that.  Comment if you've ever heard of it, will swith RW to Wav when I get to work anyway.

That's a classic RW explosion error message, I think we have a weener.

Hopfully it will be as easy as changing the setting.  I know for many folks that has solved it, but some had to rip it out, re-install and such to get it cleaned up.

That "DDHelp" error is also indicative of a problem resulting from switching from one video card to another and not properly going through the removal/installation process for the video card drivers.
I do not know if you have switched video cards, but if you have, read this:
 http://www.benchmark.com/hints/install.html

Hope that helps.
