why the 262 when.......
« on: January 06, 2007, 04:51:27 AM »
i was just wondering how come we have the 262 and the 163, but not the gloucster metoer which was the allied alternative for shooting down 262's and 163's.

i have not been in the BB long enough to know, when and why we had262 intstead of the metoer when we already have a large german planeset compared to the british planeset. i understand the metoer F1 went into serive with 616 squadron anround july '44, and F3 model (far superior to F1) around december '44.

i have done some research on the plane, trying myself to find why the 262 is in and not the meteor,
and have concluded its because the 262 was in service for 8 months longer in WW2.

would i be right?

and i find the meteor a fascinating plane, and would love to see it in game some time. is this false hope?
i seem to recall a comment soemwhere like  "we'll get that as soon as we get the meteor" in a sort of sarcastic manner that suggested soemthing had been said that it would never be put in the game.

:noid

, here are some basic specs about the metoer F1.

Nicknames: Meatbox; Meaty potato; Phantom Diver (T.7 version); Reaper (Meteor GAF version)

        Wing Span: 43ft. 0in.
        Length: 41ft. 3in.
        Height: 13ft. 0in.
        Performance:
Maximum Speed at 10,000 ft: 415 mph
            Ceiling: 40,000 ft.
            Range: 550 miles

Check out Meteor link

In reality it never got as far as air combat in WWII, just a couple of encounters.

I don't really think it warrants including on the basis of its involvement.

The 262 on the other hand did see action and we were lucky it was never produced as a fighter in large numbers.

Edit
I have discounted any minor ground attack or V1/V2 work because this is not air to air (dogfighting) combat.

Blagard has it right.  Every other "rare" aircraft we have was involved in air-to-air combat with a piloted enemy aircraft at least once.  Meteor kills were either unmanned V1s or ground targets.

It was operational from the summer of 44 on and did make it on to the continent for the final push.  The pilots couldn't direct the policy that kept them from air combat.  They were more then willing.

And of course if air combat is the key, then where's my Spit XII?  It saw far more combat then the Ta152 :)

262 surely saw more combat.  Something like 1200-1400 were produced, my memory is out a bit.  But only about 400 got to the front lines and saw actual combat.  Thanlfully not all at the same time.

I'm sure the Meteor will be along some day.....
