I'd start with a water dampened soft cloth. How did a Dell monitor just happen to be hiding in your closet?

If there is something on the screen that water won't remove you might dilute a bit of windex with water. You mentioned it is a flat screen, is that correct or is it a flat panel lcd monitor?

Some flat screen crt monitors have an antiglare coating which you might remove if you use too strong a cleaner. As I mentioned, try a soft cloth dampened with water first.

Always irritates me when someone comes over and puts their fingers on my screens.

Just take it outside and hose it off ;)

Seriously though. Staples sells a spray cleaner for monitors.
Works like glass cleaner but wont remove aniglare coatings

most CRT monitors have normal TV video inputs.
sometimes you need to take the case off to access them.
Hook the monitor up to your VHS player if you still own one, then
get a copy of Cool Hand Luke & watch the "Lucille" scene a couple dozen times

If ya dilute it at least half and half Windex won't hurt 'em, at least in my experience. No guarantees though.

I was thinking about going with a second monitor for multi-tasking.  Think I'll go check my closet for one...
