Single engine flight in the P-38

Engines on the P-38s auto-feather. Notice that the propeller stops spinning. On single engine fighters, the prop windmills.

If you shut off an engine during the takeoff roll, the engine auto-feathers. Thus, you need not reduce rpm manually.

So why can't I keep my P-38 flying on one engine?  Can someone point out what I am doing wrong?

[edit]Aha!  I get it now, you have to actually shut down an engine for it to feather.  I've been idling the engine instead.  Thanks.[/edit]
