My dads new rig I spec'd out for him:

CPU INTEL|C2D E6600 2.4G 775

SOUND BLASTER|AUDIGY 2 ZS PLTM RTL

D 1.44MB|SONY M

MEM 1Gx2|CRUCIAL BL2KIT12864AA804 R

CASE ANTEC|P180 SIL RT

DVD_BURN SONY|DRU120C BK R

VGA BFG 7950GT BFGR7950512GTOCE R

SYBA PCI TO USB CARD

MB ASUS P5N-E SLI NF650I SLI 775 1

HD 160G|WD 7K 16M SATA2 WD1600YS R 4

So he builds it out, it boots fine, all fans running, even slows down fans so you know the bios is up. Heres the problem.. black screen on his LCD monitor. Has tried both DVI with either a dvi cable or a dvi to vga converter and none of the above work.

Cant do much with no monitor... and no this rig doesnt come with onboard video.

Any suggestions to troubleshoot and find out what the problem is???

Did plug in the power cable to the video card? Many people forget that.

Yes. Fan is up and running on video card.

does the lcd have have multiple inputs?
took me a sec to realize my new widescreen dell did not auto over to the dvi input when I first hooked it up .. I had to press the button

The displaycard also has two outputs make sure you got the right one. The fact that the fans run on displaycard is not telling anything, make sure all of the powerconnections are attached. Modern PCI-E cards will _not_ work without the external powerconnector.

Balsy,

The fan might run even if the power connector isn't plugged in, since the pci-e slot also provides power.

There needs to be a cable running from the power supply to the top or back edge of the video card or it will not work, even if the fan is already running.

Those cards also come with a pigtailed 6 prong PCI-E connector. I plugged my 7950GX2 in with single 6 prong PCI-E connector that comes off the PSU & it was a little buggy, so I plugged in the pigtail & two 12v 4 prong connectors & it straightened it out.

One 12V 6 prong PCI-E dedicated plug won't (typically) supply enough power. Just something to look at if you know it's got the PCI-E power connected, it may still need more.

Actually Eagle you were on the money the first time. I spoke with him this morning, and apparently my email saying 12v to him got an affirmative even though he er... didnt know what the 12v thingy was.

So this morning he call, had talked to BFG support, and I say "so you got that 12v power plugged in???" and he says " Yah, I got the power cord run to the board", and I said "but do you have the 12v power run" and he says "12v.....whats that?"

Anyway many chuckles later, I think we found the problem...humanoid in nature.

So for further edification, if the video card power is plugged in, the fan on the video card will run, but apparently it takes the board juice to work properly.

My new 7600GT AGP video card fan would work without the power dangle plugged in also . I didn't know that it needed to be plugged in , as the instuctions never said it , or on the card mfg. web site . I finally figured that out

and the monitor showed a screen .

I was sweating bullets there for a bit

Well he plugged in the 12v, same situation. The case I picked out doesnt come with a chassis/speaker, so he cant hear any beeps.

So he has 2 thing to do.

1. start removing accessorires, hd's, sound cards and start with just a cpu, 1 stick of ram and the video card. Move ram around from dimm1 to dimm 2.

2. By a chassis speaker and listen to the POST beeps to figure out what the issue is. BFG suggests this. so they can help diagnose the problem.

Interestingly if you go to ASUS site, you really need to dig deep to find any mention of the P5N-E SLI board.

Any thoughts/comments are welcome.

You don't quote your power supply . I was shopping for a BFG video card and they said that it BFG 7800GS at newegg reviews it needed 20 amps on the 12v power dangle . I reseached alot of power supplies and unless you get one from BFG most don't have that , unless you buy a 1000 volt one

Donno if this your problem or now but seems they take alot of power or they just want you to buy PS from them .

It seems some people are running the card with quite low power supply units. Maybe the reviews will reveal something ?

52 amps on the 12volt rail...according to the site....

Im gunna pull my rig out and bring it to his house on Friday so we can cross check video cards etc...

My ram isnt compatible, but we should get it narrowed down the board, or cpu.

No beeps on boot so far with case speaker installed.

I don't have time to read this thread as I got to leave now in a guick way. But maybe a bios update would work. I read last night that people are having trouble getting large screen monitors to light up with asus mobo's. The bios update fixed the problem for everybody. I think it was with the 680i though, I'm not sure. I think u got 650 on that mobo. I saved the link but I don't have time to find it now. Look in the asus forums, thats where i found it. I'll look for it later tonight. Good luck.

Sometimes people forget the 12V 4 prong connection that on his board is right behind the back I/O panel on the top left corner of the board .

I have the same psu and it is the yellow and black 4+4-pin +12V Power Connector . There are 2 of them tied together but you usually only need one . GL

Oh i would try one stick of ram and reset the cmos to make sure its at factory defaults .
