new/used computer. p4 2.4 512Kingston DDR GF550 256mb card (yeah, it's PCI and I know that sux) Basic SBPCI 128 sound card (beat's the onboard one).

I start AH, and for a bit my fps stay in the mid 50's.

BUT after playing for a bit, they drop in the 20's.

I can't figure out why (yet).

I use FSAuto start, and I have uneeded services OFF.

(edit:just updated my bios. another thing, my onboard video show's up still in my device manager. I currently have it disabled)

So I take it it's a used computer that you just got from someone else? If so the best thing to do is to reformat and reinstall windows.

Have you done the following - Read htc Hints and Tips. Defrag HD. Use a spyware program. A registry cleaner. Check for viruses. Look at each process running and do a search on google to check if needed.

For the specs you listed I would expect in the 20-30's when in a furball. Alone and just taking off you will get a higher fps like in the 50's.

You would have serious issues if it was the onboard vc. If it's disabled you are good.

Make sure you are running the 61.77 drivers for that card, the 5000 series GForce cards do best with this driver.

yes 61.77 (the omega drivers I use are based on the 61.77 as well)

It's a fresh intall of XP home. No viruses, spyware, etc.

One thing I noticed was that my onboard video still showed up in my device mgr. It showed havin' problems w/ it's drivers. I reinstalled 'em, and now under display I show the Intel Onboard video, AND my PCI FX5500. I have disabled the onboard vid. in device mgr. There is nothing in the bios that allows me to disable it. (I can diable onboard sound in bios, but not video.)

Grrrrr... on my old p4 1.3 I had more stable fps. I would have thought w/ the upgrade to a 2.4, and the 256 vid. card (from 128) I would have at least more stable fps. I am not looking for HIGH fps, just 30-40 stable.

Check for a bad fan or heavy dust buildup on your grafix card.

What os was you running on your old pc?

Imo windows xp home might be taxing your pc. I would suggest upping your memory and setting your page file a little higher. As far as overheating you would notice other issues with the card and pc besides a lost of fps. It most be one of the processes running in the background or xp home itself.

u need more memory. Your computer is using the all available memory because u only have 512 megs. When it uses it all up, it starts using the HD for memory. As textures come and go in the game. It tends to fill up your memory hense slowing down the machine.

so w/ windows XP, 512 will fill up, but it didn't w/ win98?

I only have two expansion slots for ram, so I would have to toss the old sticks, and just pony up for two 512's. durn, seems like a waste.

ALL I want is stable. I dont' need high fps. I would be 100% ok w/ a stable 30-40.

WinXP is known for using much more memory as a result of background services/programs. One tweak you can easily perform is Control Panel > System> System Properties > Performance > Settings > Check the box which says "Adjust for best performance" You'll wind-up with a desktop that looks more like Windows98 but your frame rate should increase.

Also look for posts in this forum (Skuzzy stickys) which explain how to turn off non-essential services/programs, for an added punch.

WMlute, DL a program called XP Smoker. I used this program and it really increased spped of the machine overall. 1 tweak that was used in this program that I think helped big time was the l2 cache tweak. My CPU has a 1024k l2 cache. WinXP by default uses only 256k. The tweak increases it to use what your CPU has as a L2 cache. If your CPU only has a 256k l2 cache then no need to use that tweak as it alrdy set.

I only have 512Mb of system ram and I also use onboard sound, with a Waffle pack.
I have the luxury, or curse, to play AH for extended periods of time and do not notice a decrease in frame rate over time.
