Ground objects disappear at close range
« on: April 02, 2001, 01:53:00 PM »
Hi guys,

Not sure if this is a bug or something peculiar to my system, since I can't find anyone else complaining about it, I'm assumming the latter.

What's happening is if I'm closing low-level to strafe a GV or static ground object, it will dissappear at about 800 yards or so.  I think it has more to do with my distance above ground than anything, obviously towards the end of a pass the angle I'm using to dive will bring me closer to the ground.

This happens on landing as well (hangars and such get "clipped") when I get to low enough altitude.

As a side note, when firing at GVs, I can still get hit sprites on them, even when I cannot see them.

Am I the only one with this problem?  Is this related to not being able to see planes in hangar sometimes as well?

Thanks,

Beltfedd

Hiya Belt,
Can you post your system and particularly the video card drivers you're using?  Sounds like thats the culprit...also, what res, and color you're using, (don't enable that Z-buffering within AH either, it'll produce what your experiencing, at least it did on my box)

--Voodoo 3000 AGP with about 6 month old drivers

--AMD 800mhz thunderbird (FIC board)

--DX7 I believe

--1024x768 res/16bit color/Z buffering might be on, I'll check it when i get home from work

BTW, thanks Ripsnort!

Belt

press shift F1 to set the graphics to the highest settings and try pressing ctrl + C to kill the ground clutter, i.e. trees

good luck

Another issue I am having, just in case it might provide a clue is that I get severe frame stutter at times.  My frame rate will be up around 45 or so, but intermittently freezes for anything from 1/10th of a secong to maybe 1/3rd of a second.

Thanks again,
Belt

Posted about the Z-Buffer,but the post disappeared.Oh well.I get these occasional stutters too,but it might be of Windows doing it's crazy stuff(hidden tasks?) in the background.Especially WinME does crazy things with SystemRestore enabled

The stuttering may be a result of background apps running, especially FASTFIND...

Belt,

You're not alone. I see exactly the same thing: dive on a hanger and it disappears as you get closer.

Same thing with trying to select an aircraft or arm it on the CV. Can't be done. Have to jump to shore, set up the aircaft, then go back to the CV and fly.

All this started with the 1.06 update.

I'm using a 3D Prophet II GTS with 64 mb of ram onboard.

Guys, what res and color are you using, and do you have anything enabled on the panel that has "Z-Buffering" added to it?  Also, do you have V-sync on or off?

Again, all my problems (back in V1.01) were solved when I updated my drivers...I'll garantee you its not the version drop, but something in your box...

The stuttering on Voodoo cards is due to the connection icon for your modem 99.9% of the time.

Remove it.  Here's how:  my computer -> dial up networking -> connections menu -> settings -> uncheck "show icon on taskbar when ... " (should be the very first one)

This WILL solve the stuttering.

As for the other problem, try deleting the video.cfg and then restarting.  Now open aces high, you will be again prompted for video settings.  Pick what you would like (REMEMBER: Do NOT select 32 bit color on a Voodoo 3 or below card!!!! You will lock up with a light blue screen.)  Also make sure you don't pick z buffering, or triple buffering at this point.

If the problem persists, try updating drivers and make sure you have DX 7a NOT just 7.

Beltfedd,
You are not running "zonealarm" as well are you?. That can also cause Stuttering. I have found that setting your taskbar to "Autohide" can cure that though. (It also cured my stuttering due the the taskbar DUN icon as well).

Hope this helps

Lots of good ideas here, didn't even think of background apps and what not being related to the stuttering...  I'm guessing "zonealarm" is some kind of MS Gaming Zone proggie, and I bet it is running since I used to play FA.  I haven't had time to fire up AH the last few days, but tonight I will try the fixes out and report back the results.

You guys rule  ,

S!

Really hate these background utilities.I got the FastFind disabled, but the SystemRestore in WinME is still on.Caused a massive warping and stuttering once in a dogfight and U bet my butt was handed over to me in a gift wrap! This is soon solved since the RaidOn Tweaker for the Radeon has some handy built in tools to disable some Windows utilities running in the background.

Hi Beltfedd,
zonealarm is a free personal firewall to stop hackers etc from diving into your system and nicking your stuff. It's pretty good but doesn't seem to like AH much (Still can't moan cos it's free).
