Math Help
« on: January 07, 2007, 11:50:14 PM »
As I posted earlier, I will be taking the ASVAB next week.  If there has ever been a weak subject for me it has been math.  I hate to admit it, but this weak points begins with basic algebra.  Pretty pathetic a guy working on his Masters Degree has to say that huh (thanks public schools).  Anyways, I always was pushed on in math because I made friendly with the teachers, and did enough to get by, without ever understanding or retaining the information.  Anyways thats not important.  Reason I am writing this is because there is a math portion of the test, and if anyone is willing, i'd like to ask some questions and explainations to questions and formulas used to solve them.  Sort of a cheap/quick internet tudor.

Anyone willing?

Thanks

Cav

EX -

If Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hour, how long will it take for both of them to paint the house together?

2 hours and 24 minutes
3 hours and 12 minutes
3 hours and 44 minutes
4 hours and 10 minutes
4 hours and 33 minutes

**And please no harsh comments guys...I already feel ashamed as it is.**

Ok, this is a basic mixture problem.  If they're painting the house together, they're both going to be working for the same amount of time, right?  So let's call time x.

John paints a house in 6 hours = .1667 houses painted per hour  (1/6)
Sally paints a house in 4 hours = .25 houses painted per hour  (1/4)

So together they can paint 5/12 of a house per hour.

So you take (1/6)x + (1/4)x = 1    (because only one house is getting painted)

Solve for x.

(5/12)x = 1

x = 1/(5/12)

x = 2.4 hours.

and .4 hours * 60 min per hour = 24 mins, so your final answer is:

2 hours 24 min.

Questions, just ask.

:)

That gives me a headache.

Just write in that the house takes 2 weeks to finish. Sally and John argue over what color to paint the house the first day and that lasts a whole week itself. Then the next several days she had cramps and couldnt paint. Then 4 days later they finish after bribing her with chocolate :rofl

The answer is 4 hours..

John is a wuss who is constantly outperformed by a mere GIRL! he would obviously be fired leaving Sally to do the job at lower wages since she's just a GIRL!

The answer is 4 hours.  Sally is an indepenent and will do all the work cause John is union and cant start until 9am, needs the extra 2 hours for 15 minute pre-work safety briefing,  mandatory scheduled 15 minute breaks every hour and a 45 min lunch break.   John will start late because he forgot his safety glasses.

I always did hate that kind of algebra.  Train A is leaving from so and so...

Funny how I can analyze and design structural systems for buildings, yet Sally and Bobby working together throws me for a loop.

What kind of house?
what color?
It is the same color thats on their or are they doing a color change?
What kind of siding is on the house?
1 Story or two?
How much trim is there?
What kind of shape is the trim in?
How many windows?
Are they New windows or old wooden double hung.
If so how many panes? 6/6?
Any windows need to be reglazed?
How much prep work is involved?
Is there a porch? If so how big and of what type?
Whats the landscape like? Is it clear enough for ladders or will there be shrubbery and trees in the way? Level ground or sloped?
Are they doing the foundation as well?

Too many variables not taken into account to give an accurate answer

John pushes Sally aside and calls in a B52 air strike loaded with opened cans of paint.

B52's make a low level drop and carpet bombs a 3 block by 3 block grid of houses.

90 Houses painted in less than 20 minutes.
