ok dumb question about jobs...
« on: January 09, 2007, 10:10:42 AM »
as many know I am unemployed, and living very[/I] frugal.

MY career field is kind of small (document reproduction) and I don't quite have enough IT education to get a job in that field either. basically I am kind of stuck in a weird place.

anyway, the local Pizza Hut is having a "job fair" and is doing on the spot interviews for management. I did have a job in the fast food management back in 1993 at a taco bell (don't laugh at the time it was a good paying job LOL) and am considering going in today.

trick is unemployment.

I am getting a decent amount, and am worried the pizza hut job won't pay as much, but it is work.

would you stoop and go for the job? (granted i know I don't "have" it yet, but with my resume I am pretty confident) also at 33 do I want to go down the service industry road again?

My experience (not that it necessarily applies on your side of the pond) is that it is always good to plug the holes in your CV with work, no matter what kind. I had a stint of taxi cab driving a few years back when I was between jobs. Big holes in your résumé doesn't look good to employers.

don't mean it that way, I'm talking about keeping looking in my "field" or something nearer to that, or take a job I may leave for something better in a few months or something like that.

Get a job. Even if it's a sucky job, it is still a job. It means that you don;t feel like a lowlife blood sucking parasite. You get a social standing back, boosting your morale. It also forces you to actively look for something better, as you know you are worth more than "welcome to Pizza Hut".

This is USA, opportunities to make money, or at least a living are everywhere. 3 years ago I had to give up aviation when I lost my Visa, I became homeless for a couple of weeks, found a job carrying buckets of tar on roofs. One month later, I was managing the company. Could provide enough money to get a layer to get my green card, and come back to flying airplanes.

You can do it! :D

If you have a chance to either work at near the amount you are getting now in unemployment then go get the job. If it is substantially less, look elsewhere. It's better to have some minor job then none at all IMO. It helps your outlook on life and makes living a bit less stressfull on you over all.

Food sevice at that level does kinda suck, but not nearly as bad as not having nay job does. This is temporary go get it and move on when you can.

Hey Frenchy,

If an illegal alien Mexican is a wet back, what is an illegal French alien??? A  crepe bending frogback?!?!?!    :p
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I would look for an apprentice or helper job in a trade, electrical, plumbing, hvac, etc. Learn a trade, you will always have it to fall back on when you need work, you could start your own business or subcontract.

And you might not start off with great pay, but after a week or two, if you are catching on and are a good worker, you will get a quick raise, he won't want to lose you.

Good luck

Sold my company and did the job thing for 8 years. I couldnt take it any more. I'd rather go through start up pains again than listen to some one tell me how to do my job. If you can live through the clawing and scratching to the top, ownership has its BIG pluses.

did the job thing for a bit.  I was given a golden opportunity which was my lifetime's lucky break.  the guy I used to work for groomed me well to take over and I'm forever thankful to him, his idiot son and the American free enterprise system.

Well, i took a summer help job at beverage company for 8 bucks an hour.  Signed up for a maintenance mechanic job that had a schooling requirement and was the only one to apply because nobody wanted to go to school.  I got the job.  10 years later I am a full fledged line technician able to write my own paycheck. (albeit in overtime).  Those big companies usually offer schooling and advance those that apply themselves rather rapidly.

Go work and support yourself...yet don't box yourself in...keep striving for something better.  I was unemployed for 4 months and even though it messed up my unemployment, I worked part time at the local Sears til something better came around.

Goo dluck with the interview.  We all have to shovel poo every now and then.
