How do I avoid the "Dweeb" moniker?
« Reply #15 on: January 11, 2007, 03:13:09 AM »
Dweebs may like to fly spit 16s, but they were dweebs even before they took off with it.
It's the player which is a dweeb, not the plane. Therefor spit16 is not a dweeb plane, it is a dweeb's plane.

Fly what you like. Just fly like a man! :aok

I'm currently flying Bishop under the name Morr, at least till I can get it changed to this one. I went Bishop after a stint as a knight because I got tired of some dang LTAR shooting me down in an osti or field gun!

I've flown around a bunch of LTARs one evening. I was in a heavy 38 and there were about 9 of you behind me, talk about performance anxiety!! But y'all seemed like a decent bunch on VOX.

I appreciate all the responses, and will definately stay away from The Blue Knights (except for Slapshot).

The trouble I'm having is I'm beginning to like the La-7. Its fast, it turns reasonably well, and the views from the cockpit are mostly unobstructed.

I'm still undecided about my next aircraft of choice, but now I have several ideas as to where to go next (other than the TA, I know I need to spend more time there).

Coshy, lots of good advice in this thread. Just you even ASKING this question shows that you will not be the kind of dweeb you fear :). This thread is meant in fun, but has a core of truth to it.

Aside from that, i have little to add: Its not *what* you fly - its *how* you fly it and how you conduct yourself in the game. To me true "dweebery" in the game is trying to make up for lack of skill by talking big words and mouthing off instead. Youll find that this community is very helpful towards people that are respectful and friendly. Many a vet, if you ask him after a fight how he killed you, will sit down a minute and explain it to you.

There are a few things that are considered "lame" though, by the majority.

- "kill stealing": that means shooting the tumbling remains of a plane that someone else just worked hard on defeating. in AH, the kill goes to the player that did the most damage to an opponent that dies.... by pumping bullets in a crippled plane, you can snatch the credit for a kill away from someone else
- trying to force the Head On (HO) shot every pass (thats not only rather lame, but also not a very good tactic)
- continuosly avoiding a fight by either running or bailing (yes, you will die a lot at first, but not avoiding fight, but going in with open eyes, fighting, asking questions and spend a little time on training/reading is the only way to get better. You dont learn much from running, except how to fly fast ;))

Welcome to our dweeby little world :)!

Im glad to hear your finding your way around! :)

I see youve already run into a few things that are to be "avoided like the plague" - LTARs in an Osti . Im just glad they cant actually FLY them. :D

The La7 is actually one of the best fighters in game, for the very reasons you stated. BUT, that high performance makes it also a plane that is not very easy to fly. Im not talking about the "make one HO pass and run home to ack" kind of flying... Wheather you use the LA as a TnB/angles fighter or as a BnZ, it needs a lot of throttle and flap work to control your closure rate and turn. Im not saying dont go for it - on the contrary. It will teach you a lot - im just "warning" you that its not as *easy mode* as some comments can lead you to think.

As for Training - "you got our number" :). Dont hesitate to pester the Trainer Corps with requests for help.

A dweeb gets up in the plane he wants to fly, then flies it and has a great time and really doesn't mind if you call him a dweeb cause he's having a dynamite time in a great game.

I've been a dweeb for lotsa years now and and I'm proud to be a dweeb.

For starters, dont post asking how not to be a dweeb =) J/K!!

Actually, I say fly how you want to, learn at the rate you want to and have fun. Dont worry about what other people are doing unless you get your bellybutton handed to you and want to learn how to do that to others!  And if thats not something you care about, then just do what you want to have fun. No matter how good you are or how "non dweebish" you are there will always be people who will talk mad $@$% to you. Just ignore them and have fun...or if you like to talk back, do that =). Its your 15 bucks and if you arnt cheating or breaking the rules, then you should be able to do whatever you want.

Having said that, if you want to make friends fast:

*Always be nice and upbeat. (Sometimes we all stray from this)

*Try not to fire blatant Head on Shots...sometimes its unavoidable but generally people will like you better if you dont do it.

*Volunteer to fly a goon, or take out a VH or SOMETHING...get your name out there. Be someone people want to fly with.

*If you get HOd, don't say anything ...its really not worth it. I admit i get really pissed when i get HOd...especially if i do my best to avoid it (sometimes its impossible especially in multiple engagement fights)but i rarely if at all complain about it because it ends up making you look like a moron for letting it happen to you.

*If someone is warping like crazy ,Just know that 99 out of a 100 times, they ARE NOT cheating. Their connect is crappy and they usually cant help it. So be nice to those people. Let them know they are warpy and suggest they relog.

*SOME people in this game are just sour pusses they cant take a compliment, they make tons of excuses, and they never admit it when they are beat. When you meet one of those people, its best just to not talk to them. I recently made the mistake of trying to strike up a conversation with a "TOP PLAYER" and they pretty much spit it back in my face and insulted me out of the blue for no reason, so I got pretty pissed and looking back i really should have just let it go. We had a nice long nasty conversation that really didn't do either of us any good. Games are supposed to be relievers of stress, not causes of it =)

Some people will try and get in your head and talk trash, but you can usually tell the good natured trash talkers from the people mentioned above. Theres a few guys who fit into this category for me and while it can be annoying I know they are just having fun and I don't take it personal. Sometimes its entertaining.

Just like in life...treat people the way you want to be treated. Take some time to learn some stuff on your own. Theres some great online training material somewhere linked off the main site...Ask Schatzi, shell hook you up.

....Now if only i can take my own advice =)

I was mainly talking about the rear view. Side views I can manage by either rolling a little or raising/lowering the head position.

Dr1337:

I try to avoid the head on shots, although I will take a front quater shot if it presents itself. Although at this point my gunnery is pretty poor, so either way I usually miss. I do like hearing people cry about ho's, I just dont get it really, I mean just a little rudder and there is no ho. Dunno, maybe its something I'll understand as time passes.

I have flown so many goons/driven so many m3's that I can put paratroopers pretty much anywhere I want them, but I will continue driving the shortbus as long as it helps out.

Schatzi:

To be honest I did first get in the La-7 because I read/heard people say it was ezmode, but my first stall, failed recovery and subsequent lawn dart imitation quickly erased the idea of ezmode.

So I practiced offline with it (as well as most of the other planes I've mentioned). Blowing pieces of the circling drones off is really quite comical when you see just the fuselage flying around.

I still suck in the La-7, but when I stall I can usually recover before I meet Mr. Earth.

My work schedule swings from day to night shift, I'm transitioning this weekend to night shift, and hope to be able to get a little TA time in this month, so prepare to be pestered!

Just don't worry about what other people say. They only do it because they feel superior to other cartoon pilots. You don't hear them calling HT a dweeb for putting the "dweeb rides" in the game & they aren't so pissed off they stopped paying their $15 a month.

Also, realize that the most common reason for calling someone a dweeb has nothing to do with what plane you're in.

"Dweeb," "cherry picker," "gang banger," and a few others really mean one thing -- $%&*? You KILLED me!
Maturity is knowing that I've been an idiot in the past.
Wisdom is realizing I will be an idiot in the future.

Yeah turn channel 200 off i have had it off for the past few days now and its been great not listening to the whines or seeing someone call me a dweebfire pilot. 200 is a harsh channel and a lotta people on it are just out to get one over on his opponent in some sad slanging match i wont be putting it back on again anyway.

The way I see it, you have two options. The easier of the two, is simple:

Fly a different plane. Only the La-7 and the Spitfire XVI have earned the moniker 'Dweeb'. May I suggest my personal favorite, the Spitfire mk IX?

Second option, slightly more difficult, fly it properly, and fly it well. Fly it like a real plane, observe aircraft limitations, even those that arent mapped into the game, such as engine overheating. When you are not in a hot invironment, turn you RPMs down to normal, or even Max Cruise. Just tonight I flew an entire mission in a Spitfire IX with boost at 2 and RPMs at 2,250. Your plane does lose speed, but it can hold in the air. And then, as soon as you see an enemy, got so Military, or even Emergency power. That removes some of the dweebyness, as it does take a SLIGHT bit of knowledge to control RPMs. Then, dont just whorde, or HO, fly well. Avoid the HO, or cherry-pick, and ESPECIALLY vulch if at all possible. The Spitfire XVI is so ub3r you can get kills without ever doing those things. Basically, until you build up a reputation as a good pilot, be careful in what shots you take. But above all, be good enough that you can fly something else. The other night I saw a guy constantly landing kills in a Spitfire XVI. Everyone esle was saluting him, but I dont generally salute Spitfire XVIs. I said to him "I know your a damned good pilot. Do me a favor, fly any other plane for your next flight." he said "sure". So he did. He landed a pair of kills in another plane (I cannot remember just which one). When he did that, he really earned my respect. Its one thing to land 20 kills in a Spitfire XVI, but if you can jump in a P-47, or Bf-109, or even a Spitfire IX and land half as many, you truely are worthy of everyones respect.

Be advised, the above is just my personal opinion. Yes, I dislike the Spitfire XVI, but if you fly it well, and fly it right, truely LEARN the aircraft, both its Aces High performance and the real-world plane, no one has any right to call you a dweeb. But if all you do is HO, vulch and pick, then you are fair game.
