Installed DX 8.0a....CTD Now
« on: June 16, 2001, 10:32:00 AM »
Have never had any problems in AH.  Installed DirectX 8.0a to try the beta. Beta worked fine, but now when I start the regular 1.07.3, it crashes to desktop.  Reinstalled full 1.07.3, still crashes.  Any ideas?

Are you running Roger Wilco?  If so try disabling it.

Do you have drivers for your video, sound, and mainboard that support DX 8?

Please supply your OS version, video, audio, CPU, RAM, and Mainboard information.  I can then give you some things to try.  It is likely that you need to update video drivers for your card by the looks of things though.  AH 1.07.3 works fine for me and many others with DX8.

Sorted it out.  Everything worked fine in the AH Beta, by the way..but I reinstalled all latest video drivers, etc.  It then worked.
Now the strange part.  Every time I run the Beta version, then exit and run the regular AH, the regular AH crashes to desktop when I attempt to run it.  If I restart the computer, I can then run regular AH.  This was no fluke, I can reproduce it at will.  Something left in memory, or a file left by the Beta version maybe?  Did I miss something saying I'm supposed to restart it?

To answer your question it's just poor memory management with win9x and ME.  This happens to me in win98, but not in 2000.  (Same computer, dual boot config. )

I can't run the beta at all. I'm using a Voodoo 3 vid card and the last driver update was November 2000. I doubt that there will be further updates. 3dFx has been sold.
