I use a Sidewinder 3D Pro and have for a long time. I've never had a problem, so there must be some issue I can help with then.

Ok, first up, are you using Windows 98? Sometimes when you boot Win 98 does not "see" the stick (at least for me) so I always check the Joystick control panel in windows to make sure it's showing "OK". Now go into AH, and go into the setup screen from the clibboard. You should have Joystick button there. If you try to calibrate in that screen, what happens? Can you make the graphs move? Try calibrating in AH as well.
