Video problem Eludes me....
« on: March 05, 2000, 05:18:00 PM »
Wow,
Lately, I have been seeing pixels go transparent.  On and Off-line.  The clipboard looks like it has been shot with buckshot, sometimes the instruments go away, I cant tell if I have any ammo-those are blank.....and sometimes these little dots are flashing all over my dash and plane too!  On-line tonight, the clouds turned into big white squares and triangles.
My Monitor lost the red color....so I bought a new monitor.  No joy.  I figured that was the problem.  I downloaded the DirX 7.0a and redownloaded the Monster 3D II new drivers.  I did have a scandisk do some damage. (well the damage was already done)  I have a Compaq system, 4840, with Rage Pro Vid 2 Megs RAM, added Monster card with 8 megs.  Also, was working fine til the scandisk thing.......I think.  (hope I am not losing video card too...)

Anyone got a suggestion?

Hey K-Ken, maybe try removing the hi res texture/options and see if that lightens the load on your graphics card?

After the scan disk is when the problem started? Have you tried reloading your sound, video drivers and maybe even reinstall the game since then?

That was a thought, I tried using Hi Res and that worked a while, but then I had the same problem.  It came back.
So I went to 640 res and still had it.  This is not good....

I have reinstalled all the Monster and Updated drivers.  Finding the sound and video drivers in this Compaq is nearly impossible.  Their recovery disk is just that.....a recovery disk.  The info is all nicely packed and arranged in amny files and zips on the CD.
Late last night, after trying to lower the refresh rate-to 60 Hz.....the Monster card is not seen any longer. It exists in Device Manager, and says it is working properly.
But to try and get to Display Properties...
I now get an "environment error: glide 2x dll expected voodo^2.....None Detected."
AND "Windows had an error in control panel-File C:\Windows\System\Desk.cpl"
I have mail flying to Diamond and Compaq!
I kinda wonder if the "NEW" Monitor put too much strain on the card?     This might be the end of flying a while.  Sheesh!
Thanks for the post Westy.....my friend!

(Got a zip drive-gonna try it out and prolly Format this puter)

It only started when you changed monitors?  Was the Voodoo selected in your video setup?

No Pyro, it started around 1 upgrade ago, but
*AFTER* the scandisk found errors.  I found the exact fault at  http://www.diamondlegacy.com/faqs/faq-index.htm   just an hour ago.  I ended up deleting the entire Monster files and folders in C: and C;\Windows\diamond.  Then killed the card in Device Manager.  Started all over.  Got the card back-but I didn't install the upgrade drivers, and I am using 1024/768 res.  (which I actually preferred 640/480.    Me eye sight needs big targets!
Going to see on-line now.  I still have the small dots flashing (I assume pixels) but much fewer off line.  I'll keep you updated.  OH, I did have to tell the computer the Model and reload the SAMSUN drivers......cause it just said "Plug N Play Monitor."

(640 X 480 is still porked)  (Cant even read the roster)

OK,
I was able to fly-in the Hi-RES and had a very nice increase in FR and with minimal dots flashing on the dash and engine cowling. (wings too)  I an going to tweek the monitor a bit, but for now I am going to go with these settings.
(Is that smoke I smell?)     I wonder if the new Monitor,  and having to reset all the video settings,  confused the 266Mhz CPU....
Maybe it just has to be burnt in like a new chip!
It scared me to have to set the TEMPERATURE  settings for colors.  Really!
(I need a beer...........)  Glad I am not married any longer-I be divorced and lose everything,  1 more time!

I had a similar problem about a year ago.  What the problem ended up being, believe it or not, was the retention mechanism on my PII was not installed at all.  The slot 1 processor had come a little loose and was causing errors on my harddrive.  (I ended up doing a complete clean reinstall of Windows 98.)  Problem solved, and a pair of cable ties solved the processor retention problem.  The symptoms of the problem were screen flashes, intermittant lock-ups, and hard drive errors.  This is probably not your problem, but it sure caused me a lot of trouble tracing it down.  (My MB is an Intel AL440Lx, and as such has a very strange retention mechanism.)

1 - Be sure you have not installed any tweak
utility making your V2 to run faster than 90.

2 - Try to monitorize your V2 chipset temp.
With higher refresh rates the temperature
increases a lot. If this is the problem, you
can adquire a 3dfx cooler, they work fine
for me.

3 - Verify the environment variables and
check that there is no one related to your
Voodoo2.

4 - If you are using the manufactured drvers,
try downloading the lastest found in 3dfx
site, they work fine for me and Dx7.

5 - If you use a SondBlaster AWE64 or better,
be sure to update to the latest drivers, and
perhaps, to decrease the hardware acceleration
of this card from the audio menu.

6 - And, as a last resort, ensure that your
power supply is enough for your system. I
have had to adquire a 300W to run my SLI
combo stable.

7 - Good luck.
