Death Before Dishonor
« on: February 08, 2000, 11:22:00 AM »
This is an attempt at a reasonable discussion.

Since the beta started I have been Flying Rook.  The other night, after flying Rook for awhile, I noticed that we were loosing, even though we had superior numbers.  The Bishops, had lower numbers, and the Knights had the lowest numbers.

The Bishops and Knights were fighting each other, as well as the Rooks.

The Bishops were rapidly capturing fields, and not loosing territory.  The Knights had several Rook Fields.

The Rooks were down to two of their fields and one Knight Field.

I Tried to Hold that last Knight field, but the Bishops, came in force, and took it from me.  I killed Three C-47s before the Vultch got tight enough to keep me grounded.

At the same time F13 (The Field I was at) Another Rook Field was being attacked, and there was one defender there, and he was calling for help also.

Neither he nor I recieved any assistance from other Rooks to Hold the fields, even though, Rooks had the larger numbers.

So, I think to myself, here we are, with the larger numbers, incapable of capturing fields, and loosing those we have.

I flew a few more sorties, and logged.

When I relogged later, I Changed to the Bishop Team.

Now the Bishops are not that much better organized than the Rooks from what I have seen so far.  There were some guys that wanted to fly wing, bombers who wanted escorts, organized bomber missions, Etc, things that you rarely see the Rooks doing.

Now the crux of the matter.

Last Night I escorted a B-26 to bomb a field.

I was in a 1C and I dove to kill a climbing Spit.  The B-26 Made several passes at the Field, and was accosted by a Machi that I couldn't climb up to get in time.  The B-26 Killed the Machi.  Eventually after a nice vultch I was low on fuel and turned for a Friendly Field.  The Field I was flying from was under contention, but pretty well vultched.

I throttled back to conserve fuel, and started climbing away.

A P-51 appeared at the distance,  I went into a shallow dive, and started calling for help.  I announced my coordinates, said I was low and dragging, yet for the five minutes or more, I was trying to FLEE, no one came to help.

I know that I am stupid, cause I have a sense of Honor, that commands me to try and clear the six of any team members I see that are in trouble.

I know that I give alot more six calls than I get.

I know that I try to use Historical Tactics, Manuvers, and Evasives.

I don't game the game.

I feel lonely.

Why is it the majority of the Folks Flying don't like to wing, clear, call?

I guess I will give the Knights a try next.

(Death Before Dishonor refers to the fact that I often make the clear, but get bounced when I am low and slow after makeing the clear, hence I get killed alot clearing other peoples six.)

I fly for Rooks when squad mates aren't up, I fly for Knights when Squaddies are up, I can't detect anything discernable personally.

Downtown, we could use you in Knightville, on  Friday nights, at 6:45 PST (9:45 EST), we've been running 'lil scenario's at that time so your flying expertise would be greatly appreciated.  Look up any JG2 squaddie during that time and he'll have the "Mission".

This week~"Operation Hagelschauer " (Operation Hailstorm)

Hope to see you there!(In Knightville!)

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for joining a regularly flying squad, Downtown.  Your sense of honor and belonging to a worthy team will return in short order!  Look in the roster for squads with members that always seem to be in the air.  Fly with them a bit to see if you gel quickly with their styles of flying and fighting.  Look at their web sites, view the rosters and see how organized they are.  I did that back in AW three years ago and have been with the Cutthroats ever since.  The online flying experience with a squadron is many times that of flying alone.  On top of that, I've made some genuine real life friends with the people I fly with online.

Best of luck!

Hehe, thought for a moment that I had run into an advertisement from the "Dweebs of Death".

Don't let it get you down, downtown. Keep trying to make friends with people online, and they'll start to respond to you. Not many people will try to clear the six of a stranger, but they will do it for a buddy.

I was locked in knight land (my own fault) last night and felt the same way. With out the trust relationships you develop with your squadies and allied squadies it is hell out there. I was doing things that I get away with when I have support and getting my hat handed too me..Soundsl like you will do well on what ever squad you end up on.
Organisation is everything.
It is very highly rewarded in this game.

DownTown hook up with us (The Wrecking Crew) one night.  We fly rook, and when we get going we damn near can't be stopped =)
you'll also have someone there to clear your six, as we look out for each other.  We also try to launch as a group when we have a specific target, but get broken up sometimes by the usual rtb, get shot down, etc etc as the battle goes on.
Fly a couple of nights with us, and let me know if ya want to join.

Listen to what Cave and Pongo said....

I was fortunate enough to get in a couple of flights with them about a week ago and I have been flying with them every chance I get.

While I'm no where near as skilled at this game as Pongo, Cave, Redstar, and the others they regularly fly with, I'm learning every day by just flying with them.

Could have said the same about the Bishop's Sunday, but I've been told that this "disorganisation" runs from one country to another...
Flying Wingie with who I can 98% of the time , and it is true that it's 100% more fun/effective...

I am in a Falcon4 Squad, and am proud of it, especially when how see what a team we are !
...Still trying to get them to fly AH...I KNOW I will be safer when they are around.

Wasn't your main point I guess but here goes none the less.

As far as defending fields, I couldn't care less for field( s ). All I want to do is air-to-air, and some times there're seem to be others on-line too who enjoy that the most. I'll rather lose field( s ) if it makes the air-to-air fights more interesting than gain one. For example if one country owns the F1-country and have captured F21 or F22, it often makes more exciting fights if F21/F22 is lost. Then everyone is back to grabbing alt over the canyons etc.

The countries are more or less the same. Every now and then you get people on-line which fly the way you do, thus perhaps making it more entertaining for you. The same was in WB. Some times all my country men seem to do is try bomb fields, I either log off or switch sides depending how the air-to-air fights would be. Then other times there seems to be a group of individuals on the same time, all doing air-to-air with smart tactics and I'll fly for hours. Oh and taunt the people who start to whine on country channel that "you're not organized! attack F8 NOW!!! I will soon switch sides if you don't"

RE efending Fields
I've said this before, but can't remember if it was on this board.  Anyway, the way I feel about it is, you have to attack to defend.  The idea is to create a diversion so those capping the friendly field have a chance.

For example, I'll take off from another field and buzz the attacking field holding up 2-3 (or more) enemy planes by myself (coz I have alt at their field).  If 2 or 3 guys do this, imagine how many you'd hold off and therefore giving the cappers a chance to get alt.

RE:Clearing friendlies' six
Sometimes it ain't worth it.  Especially if I see someone at alt dive onto a bogey and gets in trouble coz he wastefully gave up his alt advantage.  I'll buzz the bogey as a distraction but I'm not going to sit on his six for a clear.

RE:Winging
Like everyone else has said, it really only works with your squad mates or a buddy you're familiar with.  I find winging with someone more trouble than it's worth.  Usually coz their flying style is too different from my own.  It's very frustrating that way!

Re: clearing a friendlies six.  I swear this is one of the easiest ways to get kills.  Target fixated enemy   I'm guilty of it as most people usually are.
