JG1 Profiles
« on: January 13, 2007, 10:20:27 PM »
Can anyone please help me find a profile of a JG1
Time Period: 1942-1943 (middle of year if possible)
Plane: 109  E or F

I've got a few books, but none have the JG1 except for 1 or 2 profiles that do not help me.

Thanks.

Well, I don't know about 109Fs, because I seem to recall JG1 switched to 190s pretty early on. I don't know of any profiles, but I stumbled across this webpage  that shows a wartime photo of a 109F(?). However I've seen a few profiles of 109Es.

There's the 1939-era green/green scheme visible on some E-1s (and probably was used on E-3s/4s as well, albeit breifly).

If you're not sure what I mean, look here

Here's an E-3. It doesn't look accurate, as I don't think any 109Es had a solid, single-color, grey upper surface. However it supplies a name and date, which you can use to search more.

Wartime photo with the description:
"Lt. KNOKE's Bf 109 E, black 3, Autumn 1941. It show the I./JG1 "Laughing sun" on motor and "Lilo". While "Losigkeit" Jagdgruppe mission all personnal marks where over-painted."
This page has more photos including the crashed plane.

I've got only 1 color profile from a Gunston book. I'll scan it in the morning and post it for you. It's a high-backed green/green Emil with a yellow nose and no side mottling.

Maybe a little late for your timeframe, this page has an image and description of a G-6/AS from JG1 (scroll down a bit it's there on the left side).

I've ordered a few more books.  Hopefully, they will be able to help me out.
In the mean time, I hope some of you here can help me out.

Thanks for the help so far, krusty.

Here's that color profile. The colors are a bit off in the printing, it's very hard to see where the two shades of green meet, but you can if you have a good eye for it.

Luftwaffe Colours Volume Five Section 1 Jagdwaffe - Defending the Reich 43-44 has a JG1 109G6 on page 21 pic and nice profile.  Also page 24.

Bf 109F/G/K Aces of the Western Front (Osprey #29) has 1 109F JG1 profile.

Bf 109E/E Aces 1939-41 (Osprey #11) has 1 109E4 profile for JG1.

Cheers,
Fencer

Luftwaffe Colours Volume Five Section 1 Jagdwaffe
Ordered that book last night.  :)

Bf 109F/G/K Aces of the Western Front
Order that last night too. :)

Third book you mentioned may not help me since year is 1941.

Question.  Do the planes get repainted after manufacturing.   Meaning, besides squad markings and kill markings, does the camo change every few months?

JG1 profiles seem to be hard to find.  I wonder why.

Probably because they switched to 190s. All those colorful Holland-based FW190s were JG1 planes.

The planes were painted with the standard color camouflage at the factory, using standard templates. In the field is where they would receive things like the mottling on the side of the craft, winter camo, and so on. They were repainted in the field depending on the time of year and other changes in camouflage.

Thanks for the info and time put in to help me, Krusty.

They flew 109s for approx. 3 years before 190s in WWII.  (Start Date: Sept, 1 1939)

I've searched the internet and libraries along with purchasing books.  All help is much appreciated.

FW-190s seem to have started replacing 109s in mid 1942.
Supposedly, by 1943, all but 1./jg1 had 190s.

You were right Krusty.  Thanks for pointing out that 190s were used early on.

1 website I was using was misleading me and throwing me off.

Profiles like sweet2th are what I'm looking for now.

I know that Sweet2ths 190 may be a A3.  I think we have the A5.
I'm still looking for 190A profile June through August 1942.
IV./JG1 would be even cooler, but I'd settle for others.
I have 1 190 book coming soon.  Woot!!!!!

I'll look, but by any chance, does someone know any major visual differences between A3 and A5?

This is a really Early version of the JG/1 paint scheme, which i think would be cool for Aces High to have.

Differences between the A-3 and A-5:

Most notably, the nose is 15 cm longer, to better improve airflow and cooling for the engine.

The A-3s were more used as pure fighters. They didn't have the outboard MG/FF when in pure fighter setup, unless they were carrying bombs or performing attack/support missions. They had less options than the A-5s did later on.

The A-5s had a higher engine rating I think, had adjustable cooling slits, and a lot more bomb/weapons options that just weren't around when the A-3 was. They also had a different radio mast setup between the tail and the canopy.

it was also to move the COG forward, ready for heavier armament (which would move it back....)

Most armament was in the wings, and since the wings themselves are close to the CoG this wasn't much of a benefit. The length wasn't specifically for CoG, but for engine issues. Whether it was a side effect is another matter.

The only real CoG issue that I recall is the aux tank on the A-8s requiring the ETC rack to be moved forward a lot to counter-balance it.

My Search is over.
I've found exactly what I need.
I've even found the exact skin of the exact plane on the exact day from the exact pilot I was looking for.
It was on 1 page of the many books I've purchased in the past 3 months.

I almost gave up on my little project.
:aok

Thanks to all your help.  With the info above, I was able to search better and therefore, find what I need.

Thank you.
