Take Shawne Merriman vs Mike Vrabel. Now on the face of it, you would take Merriman hands down wouldn't you? And alot of people would, except maybe the Patriots. And that's because they do a good job of evaluating the intangibles.
Versatility, Vrabel can play any of the LB positions in the 4-3 or 3-4, knowing all the coverage responsibilties of a very complex defense that changes week to week. Can line up as TE, has 8 receptions, all for TD's, I believe he has never dropped a pass.
Is clutch, has always come up with a big play in clutch situations. Even back when he was with the Steelers, he stripped Drew Bledsoe in the final seconds to seal a 7-6
playoff victory. Put the pressure on Kurt Warner, leading to an errant pass and a Ty Law pick for a TD in SB XXXVI. Sack and strip of Jake Delhomme in SB XXXVIII(also had a TD reception). Also had a sack and a TD reception in Sb XXXIX. Is always coming up big in big games, has great football smarts.
Now, Shawne Merriman is a great physical player who can rush the passer and raise havoc along the line of scrimmage, he's an elite player in this league. But Mike Vrabel is the more versatile player, the smarter player, and as proven on the field, the better clutch, big game player.
So Shawn Merriman will have 17 sacks a season, but in what was the biggest playoff showdown of the weekend, Shawne Merriman had 2 tackles and a sack, while Mike Vrabel had 6 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.
So if you want to say that San Diego has better athletes, so be it. But i'll debate every position as far as being a better football player.
And remember, the coaching staff is part of a team, but I don't think you're gonna want to go there.
