Power supply unit and voltage...
« on: June 25, 2001, 07:43:00 AM »
Hiya everyone!

Ok... my problem continues... unfortunately...  by now I must have chewed everyone's ears off with my problem... kindly bear with me... it is either this or I go out and buy a new graphics card...

I just remembered that the voltage in Japan is 100V.  It's not 110 or 220 unlike most other countries.  Now, the power unit has settings for 115 and 230 and currently it is at 115.  I am just thinking... 300W / 1.15 = 260W... would this be the case?? I am not an electrician... would anyone of you know?  Should I buy a step-up transformer?

Well it doesn't quite work by dividing by 1.15, but you may be on to something there...

Have you tried a power supply from Japan, or possibly a step up transformer.  I may be mistaken, but I believe the frequency in Japan is 120 Hz as well.

I still believe your problem is power related, so this seems to go along with that.

It's kinda hard to say now... it seems like a combination of heat and some other factor.  the first time i play i can play just over 30min... then it becomes progressively shorter and shorter...

odd...

Iexplorer, netscape it doesnt seem to matter.  re-installing doesnt help...

JPG files are screwed, GIF files are not.  the viewer on WinME displays the JPG file ok...

does anyone have any idea?  I started getting this some where in the middle of all the fiddling I did.

Wow, I'm stumped now.  (This is a first.  :( )

I hate Windows ME with a passion, my guess is it has tried to "fix" your system by restoring older versions of some files.

Barring that, I'd suspect a virus or something like a bad stick of ram, video card, or hard drive errors.  *Something* in your system is bad...  Does scandisk reveal any errors?  (Run the complete scan, it will take a couple hours on a big hard drive.)

Of course this all could just be due to that wonderful piece of software known as Windows ME.  :(

arrrgggghhhhhh....

this is more embarassing than ever...

ok here is the final and I really hope final story on what happened...

my problem was a combination of a lot things which has already been addressed...

I had the following:

1. BIOS problems - took care of that with updates.
2. driver problems - took care of that with updates (although some of them like the newest version of VIA came in the midst of all this. well me SB live works with it now).
3. Heat problems - took care of that with additional fans.
4. Lastly... which is the most embarassing part but I will have to admit... I wrecked my hardware.  Silicon grease found its way into the Socket for the CPU, wrecked my MB and CPU.  Had to replace it today.  and was the cause for the screen shot above.

AH seems fine now.  it works well with RW even.  If some thing else happens, i will let you know.  sorry for the trouble.
