Problem with Gun-Sounds / DirectX
« on: July 05, 2001, 11:45:00 AM »
Hi there!

when I fly with AH I can hear no Gun- and Ack-Sounds. After first replies to my question in the "Help and Training" Forum I fund out, that this seems to be a problem of my system. When I run the Sound test of DXDiag, I can't hear the test sound, but only a short repeated Sound (like a scratched "hanging" LP in the old days). When I turn the Hardware-Acceleration of the soundcard down to "No acceleration", the test works fine and I hear all sounds in AH, but as you might imagine, I'm not really happy with this solution   :( .
Here are the specs of my system, that I think are important for this problem (ask, if you have to know more about it!):

WIN98SE
Duron 700 overclocked at 933 (rockstable  ;) )
Abit KT7A Raid
HD WD 400BB Ultra-ATA100 at IDE Port 3 (HPT370 Controller Chip)
Soundblaster 128 PCI (Creative Drivers from 8-15-2000)
ISDN Adapter: AVM Fritz! Card PNP ISA
MSI Grafic Adapter with Riva TNT 2 Pro and 32MB (Drivers are Detonator 6.50 from 12-04-2000)
DirectX 8.0a German (DXDiag says: "DirectX-Version: DirectX 8.0 (4.08.00.0400)")

Anybody here, who knows this problem or has an idea, how I can run AH correctly AND use the Hardware-acceleration?

Much thanks

HiRise

Heya,

I had a problem when I upgraded to DX8 where I would loose my gun sounds followed by all other sounds as well as my custom gunsight(replaced by a white square) and all custom views. If this is happening to you I am sorry to hear it. I reloaded AH and every driver on my machine and nothing worked.

However I did reload my OS eventually (win98) and it fixed the problem. When I upgraded to DX8 I must have corrupted a file or two. Forget DX diag it's worthless. Reload your OS and cross your fingers. It's not as bad as it sounds.

You might try reloading the drivers for you soundcard (get the newest ones now) and then if that doesn't work, try decreasing sound acceleration by only 1 notch or 2.

Beware, those problems sound very much like the symptoms reported by others when infected with a nasty little virus... the name of which escapes me.  Bleh.  Anyway, if you see these symptoms, get an up-to-date virus scanner and scan your system.

Hi LephTurn

Thanks for your warning. The virus definition files for my Norton AntiVirus 2000 were quite up-to-date (about 14 days old) but anyway I downloaded todays definitions and checked my system twice (once in DOS-Mode and once under WIN) including all system areas, all types of files and zipped files, but no virus was found.
Can I be sure now, that my system is clean, or is this virus, you are talking about, such a nasty little sucker, that it might still be hiding somewhere?

Heya's<S>

Glad I could help. Seems harsh to have to reload OS but it was quick and really didn't change anything.

Lephturn,

Will take a look at my virus software and check for any cooties in my system. The only system problems I have had lately have been tied to Zonealarm which single handedly porked my machine.

BTW Newguy,

We had a good fight in the MA the other day<S>

But now I have DirectX 6.1 on my copmuter, but I need v8.0. Does anybody Know, how I can Reinstall 8.0 without destroying my sounds again?
