Supported 3D solutions in AH

Scuzzy,

Have you guys tested any of - and do you "generally support"  - the 3D stereoscopic solutions with AH?  I'd be inclined to try 3D out (the 3DVisor looks pretty interesting, although I'm not sure how much I need to "see" my desk when I fly, so I need to pay some attention to that first) but truth is, I'm a 1 game man - I start with a game and stick with it for years at a time.

So if it doesn't work (well) with AH then I'd probably not want to mess with it, but it sounds cool enough to ask about.

I realize that you may not be able to tell me yourself whether they add to the immersion or not, but at this point I'm more trying to get a sense for whether you guys believe that they should work reliably or not, and if so, if there are particular solutions that you as the developer believe is more (or less) likely to be satisfactory when coupled with an NVidia 7800 based system.

and thanks in advance,

Grue

I tried the "shuttered glasses" type a few years ago (can't remember the brand name offhand)... it had a certain "neato" value, but it wore off quickly, and I never used it when flying online. In order to split the screen into left and right pieces, each half gets degraded... both in framerate and in intensity... so overall it looked darker and stuttery.

The only thing it really worked well on was looking inside the cockpit, up close... anything outside the cockpit may as well have been at infinite convergence anyway, so the 3-D effect would not help at all with any kind of external situational awareness.

So it's sorta cool, but not worth the money.

What IS worthwhile, if you're going to keep playing AH, is TrackIR. I highly recommend it, and I think it gives a better "3-D" feeling on a computer than true stereoscopic vision does, and it does not degrade your video image at all.

We do not actively support that type of hardware.  Personally, I have not seen a solution which is both cost effective and works well.  Some of these implementations increase eye strain dramatically.  Most are locked into one low resolution image.

We do support TIR.

I'll need to dig my TrackIR back out, find my "flyin' hat", and give it another go.   I made an attempt to use it with WWIIOL, and it was "the poo", especially when combined with the single digit frame rates that were often the norm when I engaged.

and thanks for the answer.
