I am having a difficult time setting up my BEFSR 41 V2 Linksyys wired router.  Im able to get internet connection to the computer hard wired to the cable modem, but I keep failing to get a connection on the second computer I am trying 2 hard wire...Does anyone have any experience with setting up 2 or more CPU's on a wired linksys system??

I have a linksys router for both wifi and wired connection. The thing was plug and play for me. I had to do nothing to make it work, either for wifi or wired. All I did was encrypt the wifi portion later on. I wonder if yours might not be defective or you might have a bad cable.

I have a similar question about a Linksys router.  Vonage gave me one with a phone adapter built in.  How do I find out what the password is to get in and reconfigure it?

Try username: admin
      password: password

some use the same username with no password at all.

Happens to me once in a while when my IP give me a new IP address

Try powering everything down and unpluggin ghte rounter

Then with all computers hooked up but powered off power up the cablemodem. Once that gets a internet connection them power up the router. Same thing. them boot up the computers.

You should be good to go.

If that doesnt work. check and make sure your ethernet cards are enabled and working properly (I am assuming you checked this already though)

CAV, make sure you setup the Linksys to provide IP addresses with DHCP.  That way it will get an IP address from your provider, and give different IP addresses to the computers in the network.  

Make sure that the cables connecting the PCs to the router are not cross-over cables.

Check the network settings on the 2nd PC and make sure it is set to get an address from DHCP.

Plug cable modem into WAN port on router.
Plug computers into router LAN ports 1 - 4.
Ensure computers are set up to automatically get ip address DHCP)
Reboot cable modem (pull power plug, wait 2 full minutes, plug back in)
Reboot router (pull plug, wait a bit, plug back in)
Turn on computers

That ought to work.  If it doesn't, try a hard-reset of the router, which usually involves pushing and holding the reset button on the router for more than 5 seconds.  Then go into the router and change the admin passwords.

If that still doesn't work, download and install the latest router firmware from linksys (it's in the router admin setup)

If all else fails, read the manual which may have you do odd things like cloning your primary PC's MAC address to your router.

what Eagl said ... and if you get "No ping to the MA " you have to go into the setup and allow aceshigh for ports 2000-6000  on your gamers subnet ip ... or you'll have no vox and get udp switch all the time (happens to me when ever power goes off )

Cav, I just set up the same router with two wired computers behind it.  I had some problems due to some confusion of which cable to use to the second computer.

 I mistakenly bought a "patch" cable, which has terminal ends wired the same: Tx to Tx, Rx to Rx - and therefore won't communicate.  I had to go and get a "crossover" cable which is wired differently - if you look at the ends you can see the colored wire is different in each terminal, whereas in the patch cable, the order of the colored wires is the same in both ends.  

The crossover cable is what you want.

Once I had the right cable it was plug and play.  If this is your problem, its easy to fix.

A crossover cable is only required when connecting a PC to another PC, or a network switch to another network switch.  If both PCs are connecting to the Linksys, a crossover cable will just muck things up.

Gunthr, if your setup only worked with a crossover cable then something is wired incorrectly, or you were plugging into the uplink port.

Linksys router defraults are generally:

Username: Administrator
Password: admin

I don't -think- either is case sensitive.

ive got the same routor ...use the wan port to hook to the modem ...use a normal R-45 cable ,,, dont use a crossed over "patch " cable here ...

use ports 1 -4 to connect to the other pc's  use  normal R-45's here also ...

the only time you need a Crossed over cable is if your adding a switch to add more then 4 pc's to your network or if your getting a collision in packets .


(Sometimes the cable company gives ya a patch cable instead of a normal one and that causes a no connect condition ... ive seen this a couple of times . )

Auger, I do have a yellow Cat5e Ativa Crossover Cable with the Linksys router.   I have internet access on both computers.  

I am having a problem setting up a secondary email account on her computer using Thunderbird OR Outlook Express.  She had AOL before and I thought the problem might be related to getting rid of the AOL badge and God knows what other AOL stuff on there that might be preventing me from setting up new email.

Can you clarify?

Otherwise known as a "Cat5" cable which is usually the most prominent thing to spot on the package.

Recently I've seen and actually bought a Cat6 cable.
Supposed to be newer/better.
Picked it p cause I couldnt find a cat 5 in the length I wanted.
have it hooked up now but havent noticed any difference better or worse
