Actually, the couple that owned the horse spent the money and time trying to save the horse knowing he probably would not heal well enough to actually even breed a mare. Those horses are bred to have very fine light bones, and once broken, they rarely heal well, regardless of age and care given. There was a chance he could be bred again, and there was also the chance that he'd at least be a donor for artificial insemination.
There's no doubt that a race horse is a "working" animal, in the same sense that a drug dog is a "working" animal. That does not mean that the trainers, handlers, and others do not develop a relationship with the animal, regardless of what kind of animal it is.
