Shame they euthanized him.  He could have lived the life if he was only a touch more lucky.

Never cared for horse racing or "steeplechase". Most often it's the horse that ends up paying the price. The human involved could just as easily get a motorcycle or an ATV and leave the horse out of it.

I was pulling for Barbaro the whole time, when it got quiet, I was hoping he was out of danger. Damned shame.

And yeah, MT, I get the joke. It might even have been funny, if it weren't at the expense of a beautiful and spirited animal.

Ow, that "joke" hit me right between the eyes.   Never would've caught it if Savage hadn't pointed it out.

For shame, MT.  RIP, Barbaro.

We should dedicate a base or a map to Barbaro.

When is the memorial flight?

I understand that Alpo has just gotten a rich ingredient change.......

For those who are grieving........
For crying out loud, it was just a horse. Get over it!

JUST a horse. A good horse is no different and no less a friend and companion than a good dog, and I think a lot more of many dogs than I do of a lot of people. And no, I'm not a tree hugger or a PETA member. But I do have a great deal of respect and admiration for a fine animal with a great spirit.

that is definitely a bummer.  still do not feel it to be national news.  my friend's horse was put down two weeks ago, and it was a very fine canadian warm blood that sired quite a few jumpers I am told.  nothing was mentioned of that.  she is still very heart broken as I would expect.

Sorry but that horse was not even a pet. It didn't have the familial impact like a family pet would to enrich a person's life. Instead it was an attempt to enrich financial investments of the owners. Secondarily those who gambled on it.

Ever own and train a horse? You practically live with the animal, and you develop a mutual trust and understanding, or you don't succeed.

What we have here is a case of jealousy.  Mave was jealous of the horse.  And who wouldn't be?

Had the surgery been successful, the horse would have spent a year being paid LOTS of money to sire other horses and do whatever it wants to do.

Had the children been even remotely successful, Barbaro would have spent the REST of his years studding out for MILLIONS of dollars and spending the rest of his days eating and playing.

I'm jealous.

Actually, the couple that owned the horse spent the money and time trying to save the horse knowing he probably would not heal well enough to actually even breed a mare. Those horses are bred to have very fine light bones, and once broken, they rarely heal well, regardless of age and care given. There was a chance he could be bred again, and there was also the chance that he'd at least be a donor for artificial insemination.

There's no doubt that a race horse is a "working" animal, in the same sense that a drug dog is a "working" animal. That does not mean that the trainers, handlers, and others do not develop a relationship with the animal, regardless of what kind of animal it is.
