Observer missing key elements
« on: February 01, 2007, 11:58:15 AM »
I was observing a squaddie in a fighter sortie (I was tagging along) but there were a few problems.

- his guns didn't fire. No tracers no muzzle flashes. No hit sprites when he scored hits (normally hit sprites only appear to the one firing, but I was an observer, so you'd think I see everything he does). Ammo listed full all the time.

- only airspeed and altitude and climb rate seemed to work (maybe G-meter, but I didn't really look at that) all engine dials show the engine as "off".

- target may have disappeared behind the gunsight like the old film viewer. I seem to recall this but can't be entirely sure.

It wouldn't be so bad without the instruments, if we could only see the guns firing and the ammo counter ticking down. Seeing the throttle settings might be nice, though, if we wanted to see how somebody cut throttle in a turn. This wasn't the case but it would be a helpful tool for training.

Happened to me a while ago Krusty. I was tagging along in the back of Redtop's P47, and no gunfire, no sound, no hit sprites nothing!

I don't know... I don't recall it ever being this way. You should at least see a crosshair, guns, tracers, etc.

It has always been this way. was just commenting about it with Skyrock the other night too.

It would be a nice feature, to see that info, also we had an idea...

.join XXXXX

then when joined, an option .showviews

so you see what the other guy is doing with his views or hat.

possibly a toggle... .showviews 1 and .showviews 0

I don't know how much they can seperate friendly from foe when giving you info from other players AC. You may gain the ability to see how you got beaten by an opponant on film. Nice, but would be a short cut in the learning curve that is well outside realizem.

Gun fire and hit sprites though, should be available to all.

Krusty, AFAIK it has always been that way. When joining someone as observer, you will only get the data that his FE transmits to the server. The things you do NOT see are the ones that get calculated on his end alone (like views, hit sprites etc). Only HTC crew can answer this of course, but I would think that transmitting all that data additionally would increase the server load to unplayable levels.

Well the server already has "firing guns" data, because you can see other aircraft's tracers and muzzle flashes. You're right on the other stuff, though. Wouldn't want to make the lag any worse, I suppose :(
