Setting the views. Up and down?
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:45:05 AM »
Folks,

I would neer believe it when I bought my X52, that I could run out of buttons.

My initial setup for the 8-way hat was to have the diagonal positions for up fornt left, up front right and respective rear up right and left.

Now I came to the edge of wanting to extend my FOV to the horizontal plane w/o having up components in it.

Where do you map the button to have the up component? I dont seem to find a good one, except the small 4way at the rudder, but this will kill the best flaps-map for me.

Any suggestions? I know it boils down to personal preference, but a clue might come in handy for trial.

Best regards!

Matt

Matt,

I have a X45, not a 52. Im using the pinky switch on the JS for the "look up" view.

For the diagonal views im combining hat and look up view.

On my old stick, I had to use the Fire B button (ie Joystick hand index finger) for look up. The Fire Primary and Secondary had been mapped to buttons that I could push with my thumb at the same time. That setup took some time getting used to, but worked well.

No need to run out of buttons...
Just map your hat with all horizontal views (left, right, back left, ect). Then map the "look up" view (corresponding to the "5" key on numberpad) to any convenient button on your throttle. Now you press your hat for the direction of view, then just add a "up" component to this by pressing the "up" button on throttle at the same time.

Keiler I have my X52 pinkie switch mapped to Look Up. As Lusche points out, that will modify your 8 hats views to "up" views. Stand alone squeeze on the pinkie gives me a "straight up" viewpoint.

button "D" on my throttle is my look up component. pinkie is clipboard :aok i find trying to hold down the pinkie and fiddle with the hat switches all on the same hand, while flying, too much, spreading the load between 2 hands makes it feel easier

*oh edit* i too have the x52

BTW the other way to do the "UP" views is to set one button to switch modes.
Use mode 1 for the flat views, mode 2 for the up views. You can then quickly toggle between the set that you need.

Main ones you need for combat are rear, up rear, up, up forward, and of course gun sight.

This also has some other button saving advantages.
Such as being able to toggle the trigger from primary guns only to all guns.

I have it the same way, but on the X45.  I tried the pinkie switch, but trying to do three things with one hand (look up, change view, fire guns) was far beyond my dexterity level.  the up view is now mapped to the big, orange "D" button on the throttle - it sits right under my left thumb.  Seems much easier and natural this way.

That's the setup I use.

You really want to free up some buttons get a TrackIR.  All you'd then need is forward on the POV switch to cage your view to your gunsight and you have 15 hat switch positions you can use for something else.

Pre-TIR I used SKJohn's method but added "look down" modifier to the pinky so I had full 360 degrees including up and down.

Thanks a lot for all the responses!

I will try and remap my WEP button on the throttle for FOV toggle, and put the WEP on the stick. LOL. Prolly the third or fourth time I switch stuff and get confused when the stuff gets thick :D.

Not to speak of that I got myself a set of rudders which make my fly like a seasick, pregnant pelican with too much brandy in the veins :D

Thanks all,

Matt

The good news is after a week with whatever settings you finally end up with, will start to become second nature.

Most of the old fighter jets had a coolie hat but it was used for trims and not views. We substitute it with views which we can further adjust, using a macro, to meet our needs. The good news is you actually get 20 views with a std 8 way hat the the look up modifier. That's not bad. Especially when you learn to use liftt vector as a part of your viewing habits.

IMHO stick setup is suited to individual preference and we are all different. That means what's logical to me might be foreign to you. However, views are pretty simple. Also, the reason folks are putting the look up modifier on a throttle button is because you need to be able to continually use your thumb on your hat without interfering with your aim, view or fighting your dogfight.

FYI I, as one of the trainers ,spend alot of time setting up folks sticks in the Training Arena (TA). If you have any problems just drop in and ask any trainer there. Anyone can help you.

Hope this helps.

I map look "up" to the #2 button next to the hat switch...   'hat' and 'look up' using the same thumb. Plus its nice to look in all directions, and up, with the slight shift of 1 finger.

Mace, how long did it take you to get the "hang" of TrackIR?

Took about a week to get "comfortable" with it, i.e., able to fly and fight without becoming disoriented while generally keeping track of everything in small furballs or an easy 1v1.  Maybe a couple of weeks more to where I could handle furballs and intense 1v1's but it really probably takes a month or two to get to where you don't even think about it.  I knew I had it down when I turned TIR off and tried to fight using the hat switch and couldn't.:aok
