If you find the armor plate too vision limiting, maybe you could fix that by altering the way you have things mapped.
I fly the corsairs more or less exclusively, and honestly I got over the vision problem within maybe 10 minutes of flying the "new" graphics.
I use an X52 joystick. I mapped the main HAT switch to my normal views, and a button my left thumb sits on, on my throttle, for up view. The big change I made in mapping was to map the "slide head left/right" onto the 4 way hAT switch on my throttle, that my left index finger sits on.
My six view is slid away from the seat, with my head as high as possible, but centered. I use the HAT switch to slide my head left/right as needed to check my six.
HONESTLY, I do not even notice the armor plate anymore until I see a thread like this, or hear someone mention it in-game. I can look any direction I want, slide my head around, and shoot at the same time. Not really a big deal. I wouldn't mind a mirror though if it was do-able.
Of course, I'm massively in favor of Hitech making the graphics as well as the flight models etc, as absolutely accurate as possible. I know they will never be perfect, but I for one appreciate the effort. I would rather deal with vision-blocking accuracy than fly around in a WW2-theme goldfish bowl. Then again, I do hunt with a .54 flintlock as my preferred firearm, and a redtail hawk for small game, so it may be that I'm just addicted to challange...
