Was going to reply to another topic bus saw that it was getting a bit long and a bit sidetracked .

Ok I bit the bullet last week , why you may ask would posess me to do so?

I think I just got sick and tired of Macafee's stupid security center which was a hog and on the last update of which was giving me massive dumps.
I was also using tuning program called system mechanic which was also starting to get bloated ,so I thought maybe the latest greatest from Mickey might offer some improvement.

I picked up Vista Ultimate upgrade but before I installed it I got rid of both macafee and mechanic, come to think of it there were a few others programs that had to go.

Installing vista did not run into any problem with the basic  upgrade or at least I did not get a blue screen .

It did inform me that some of the programs I still had had some compatibility problems. They were Pinacle Studio (which really is a peice of manure since even after all their upgrades it still crashes) and a note saying that Vista does not support MPU-401 midi interfaces (?)

Aha not to bad I thought. Then I tried to install the windows live security suite from a dvd . What a peice of crap that was .......not the program but the utter lack of Mickey soft checking to see if it really installs with the DVD.
Finally gave up and d/l from the website and that had no problem installing.

On to AH2

First thing I did was d/l the 100 series beta driver from Nvidia and also a  beta from creative.

Verdict  Neither of them were ready for Vista .

Tried my Saitek software and had to go to their website and d/l'ed their latest drivers for  my x52 and rudders. Drivers are nice but if you were using profiles with their software we will be waiting for them to upgrade their software.

Trackir 4 , there was a problem regarding a permission,it  was easily solved though it did take a bit of finding.

AH2 worked first shot , though I know have had to use the mapping functions supplied (Hey they are pretty good!) and so far it seems to be running better though I have see the odd slowdown when getting the first vox call.

Is it worth it ,
beats me but my systems does seem to be running a bit smoother though I have yet to try a lot of stuff ie other programs and the like.

Things to watch out for ...drivers drivers drivers .

My SLI setup would seem to be a waste until Nvidia sorts out their house. Creative is missing a lot of features that were availible on XP

Oh yeah , I'm still trying to track down the MPU-401 error , says that it is a Nvidia problem.....

My system
AMD x2 4600 939
Asus A8n SLI
2 Gigs DDR
2 7800GT in SLI (Ebay reasonable used ..check link in Nvidia's SLI club)
3 HD- Sata 1 120gb,sata 2 150, sata 2 250..
1 Audigy 4 SB
and misc other add ons , as you can see a homebuilt, much easier to get it by SWMBO ......honey I'm just picking up a drive for $100 rather than saying I gonna spend $1500.

Snivly (still a Dweeb)

NVidia has not released drivers for the NForce3, and earlier chipsets for Vista.

Creative cannot add support for the MIDI interface as Vista has pulled that support.

All the missing sound features is a design decision from MS.  No more ASIO,.  No more EAX.  No more DirectX Sound plugins, and so on.  MS determined those are all suspect in the new world order of DRM.

The only reason you think it is running better is due to it being a fresh installation.  If you had done a clean installation of XP, and then tried Vista, you would be very unhappy with the performance degradation.

Vista is slower than XP on the same hardware (even if you increase the RAM).  This is not a guess, or speculation. It is a fact.  People all over the Internet are clamoring about saying (hoping) it is the drivers and they will get better.

Yes, the drivers will get better, but the performance will never be as good as XP is. Unless MS yanks all the DRM crap out of Vista and removes the requirement for all drivers to be .NET based.  Those two things might get Vista's performance back to the same levels as XP is now.  Might.

But dunt hold your breath.

There is only one answer to Vista.

Just Say NO!

If no one buys that junk they will have to rethink their plan.

It's not that I have issues with Vista, per se.  I have issues with people who claim Vista is a super neato OS.  I realize ignorance is bliss, but unfortunately, I cannot afford to be ignorant of what lies in Vista. I have to support it.  Warts and all.

I think what bothers me the most is with each purchase of Vista, consumers are unknowingly voting for all the DRM and HDCP crap in Vista which is going to bite most people in the tush in the near future.

I can see why MS chose to remove features of Vista in order to get it shipped.  Had they shipped Vista when HD content was readily available and hardware for computers was available to be able to play that HD content, then the uproar would have been deafening.

This way, they can sell millions of copies before anyone is the wiser as to what they have given up in order to have this OS on thier computer.

Neat marketing strategy.  And it is working.

MS is a lousy programming company, but they do accel in marketing.  I really do not know a company who is better at it.

I wouldn't get Vista for another year and a half. By then it might be ready for prime time. My XP, AMD 2800+ with a NVidia 6800GT should last that long.
