Oh come on, I can see the string! CLEARLY that was done by ILM, before Lucas started mucking it up with horrendous CGI. :D
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

What do you mean, - it was a quick death!
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

If I had to guess, I'd say the picture is mis-captioned.  It looks more like a ground explosion to me.

If this is the 406th (Fighter) Group, they were actually trained as dive bombers and engaged regularly in strafing, close support and dive-bombing runs.

That said, they did fly escort, too.

No mention of the photo or a Captain Walsh at this website of the 406th.  I'll keep looking a little more.....

Thats what I was thinking looking at this pic.  Unless its a vulch, why would that road in the background be that clear?

Maybe they wanted to say "The best aircraft destruction pictures of the war."  Meaning it was on the ground :)

Just a thought.

I'm guessing it was an ammo truck or rail car. Gasoline doesn't explode like that.

Could it have been a plane smashing against the ground after it was destructed in the air by 5 cals?

If you look in the bottom right coner you can kinda make out a rail car. I bet it was a locomotive. It also looks like a fence.

8-point-roll paused in the middle to take a picture of an object on the ground?
