HOTAS stick setups - examples

after giving out around 10 false check 6 calls yesterday after remapping, i reworked my setups graf for my own reference print.

thought about to share my setup, maybe i get some ideas for changes. i do only have the views stacked (up + left = up left).

feel free to post your setup!

the prop RPM has no real use for me - when to use?

searched for a posting like this, but did just find some "how to setup stick?"-thread...

When the check six feature was added I gave lots of false calls by accident. I corrected this in the control manager by making it a two button command. Using the shift function and the check six button at the same time has fixed it so that I have to consciously select the right combo to give the call.

I use the same shift feature for launching ordanance also. That fixed those 'Dagnabit' instances where ords are accidently deployed.

As for RPM, lower RPM creates less drag, usefull when you are deadstick trying to get back to base. Also, combined with manafold pressure, a lower setting can increase your fuel milage significantly.

In AH, firewalling the throttle is commonplace since there is no penalty in AH for doing so except that with the fuel modifyer at 2.0 your flight time is affected. Using fuel saving settings on climbout and cruise you can greatly increase your flight time.

i thought that manifold pressure does not have any practical impact on the fuel consumption (eg. same range at most speeds)?

nope, the picture was done by hand in visio.

Manafold pressure has a much smaller effect by it's self, but combined with RPM the effect is far greater.

Check it out using the E6B, make sure your speed is stabilised for each setting and compaire them. With the proper settings even a legless plane like an La can go quite far.

I might add that this info is anecdotal and I claim no real world knowledge of how aircraft powerplants consume fuel.

The LA7 is a perpetum mobile @ 300mph with tweaked cruise settings.

Here is my CH-HOTAS (FSPTPP-USB) Set Up

 


The settings are without the ones of the Pro Pedals, which are selfexplanatory including the brake functions.

The Field of View POV is set on the Throttle (all 8 views). The "look Up" function is set on the Stick (Pinky) button. The Hat on the Stick is set for Trim and other functions, because the Hat on the Stick is hard to reach and by forcing the thumb towards that Hat the grip on the stick becomes a bit exaggerated and tense.

Quite a few functions on the Stick are set to work with the SHIFT button, which is on the Throttle. As you know, there can be only one SHIFT dedicated button, therfore there is none on the Stick.

The layout of my settings is written on a specific Adobe Reader (.pdf) template for this purpose, it can not be saved, but printing is possible. I did make a screen shot from it in order to have it shown here in the forum.

I've been working on my layout for ten years or better.  Here is my latest version (for FighterStick/Pro Throttle/Pro Pedals/Throttle Quad + TIR4).  

 Sorry for the lefty version.  You'll have to look at this in the mirror.  



This is a hotas setup  I built myself but the layout is pretty much a standard FS/PT arrangement.  Maybe someone will find it useful.

I find it interesting how everybody takes such a different approach to this.

This is my Cougar setup.  Many of the same buttons as the CH has.  I have been developing this since AW over 10 years ago.  It might give you some ideas.



I have grouped things by button.  All my views are on one hat, with the exception of up and down on the throttle.  This gives me all views in combination with the up and down.  

Wepons all on my trigger, auto-pilots on one hat, Commnications on another hat, etc.  All my bomber specific commands are shifted.  Three axis curve settings that can be changed on the fly.

There are a few things I wish AH did, so I programmed them.  Auto film stop after each flight, my shift button doubles to hide the cursor (moves it off screen to the bottom left), all vox keyed with one button with a channel changer button.  Same with text radios using canned text messages.  I only touch the keyboard to type a message.

Larger problem is remembering what I put where.

Big question for me is where can I get one of those charts you guys are using so I can print a copy of my own out for quick refrence?

Why not use the inherent Printing Facility of the CH Control Manager and just use those images to display the setup?

simple setup...

I use a CH stick, and x45 throttle.

stick (only changes in mode 2 is hat's 1 and 3 cycle through the gun positions) and the hat is the standard POV views, i hold down "look up" on the throttle for other views.

also on the stick I use the throttle for RPM control




throttle has some quirks. the back hot not shown in the pic is labeled above, the other thumb hat is listed, and I use the rudder rocker for moving the head back and forth in banded mode.



also in GV mode on the x45 i use the bottom rotary to shift up / down in GV's



don't have anything set for mode "3" on either stick, as it is I have ablank button on the CH I don't know what to put there anyway
