I'm with Max. I like the C model because of the canon, but it does cost points. That can be really frustrating when you try to take off from a carrier and you don't make it cause you can't handle the carrier turning. Bad enough paying for a plane, but to not even get off the deck with it?

I usually take one of the freebie ones for the first flight, if only to see what kind of resistance I'll be dealing with. If there's umpteen cons and only a few friendlies, no reason wasting points buying a C only to get shot down before you can barely get a shot off.

F4U-4 by FAR the best of the Hogs. In fact, she's just about the best all-around fighter in the game PERIOD. She carries a bit of a perk price, but for dammed good reason. Outclimbs, outruns, out accelerates every other Hog. Best vertical. However the engine is a gas guzzler, and IIRC she carries the smallest internal fuel load to begin with.

I have to put the 1A next. Faster than the 1D and 1C by about 50mph, and does pretty much everything better than the -1 except generate perks. Excellent endurance. The most maneuverable Hog (even better turner than the -1, and will beat it in the vertical). Still not exactly sure how she escaped a light perk (5-15) but I won't tell anyone if you wont.

Next 1D. Probably the best jabbo of the bunch due to the extra pair of rockets. Better climb and acceleration than the -1, though slower and sacrificing maneuverability to a limited extent. Shorter range than the -1 or 1A, but greater than the 4.

1C fourth. Although the cannon pack a punch, she lacks the ordinance loadout of the 1D so while a good strafer, isn't quite as effective as a jabbo. Also, the weight of the cannon are noticeable, as she's the slowest and least maneuverable Corsair (that being said, all five are close enough that the difference is really rather insignificant). The best vulcher, and the 20mm will generally discourage most HOers.

1 I would have to rate last. She's tied with the 1A for speed (second on the list, or a very close third with the difference being practically insignificant) with I think a slight advantage in range--fuel distribution IMO leaves something to be desired, though. However all-around visibility is poor, and especially at low speeds she feels VERY heavy and sluggish. Acceleration and rate of climb are rather poor. She's a perk farmer though, and has the highest ENY of any Corsair.

The 4 obviously.  Then without a doubt, the F4U-1  completely owns the others.  It has better stall characteristics than the d and c and 1-A.  It might not be faster, or have better climb, but it has great handling at the edges of the envelope!  1-Hog Rules!

after that its the C (purely for firepower)
then the 1-A
then the D
:aok

If the -1 has better stall characteristics than the other Hogs something is ROYALLY FUBARed in the FM, as the -1 lacks the spoiler that improved departure behavior. Not gonna say it made the Hogs docile in the low-speed stall, but greatly improved over the -1.

Assuming that's true, than that needs to be addressed.

Hrm... what the heck? I made a reply to this post over an hour ago and it's gone!

EDIT:

Not sure WHAT happened to my post!!!

Anyways, I was pointing out that I think the Chog has same ord capabilities as the Dhog. The fact that they're going to add perked 20mm to the Dhog (but make no other changes) seems to support this.

I also pointed out the D, C, and -4 hogs all have the same internal gas, it's just that the 4-hog uses more gallons per hour, so the -4 has shorter range. Always take a DT with the -4.

F4U-1C carries four HVARs to the 1D's eight.

Ah. I'm guessing that when the C-hog is removed the 8-rkt option will be available still on the D with 20mms

C can carry only 4 rockets, the D carries 8 I think!:aok

I am basing my belief on experience alone.  The 1, to me at least, appears to have a little better contol at the top.   All of them are excellent, just from my experience, the 1 has just a tad more control at the lowest speed.  Is the 1 any lighter?  This might back my claim!
