KI-84 underestimated?
« on: February 19, 2007, 11:18:42 AM »
What with the spit 16 being such a popular plane, why is the frank so negelcted? i dont know if the info on DokGonzo's page is still accurate, but it looks like the the 84 has all the abilities of the spixteen with exception to climb rate. i've been flying the 84 regularly this month, and although i am no ace i have had moderate to good success with it in the MA's.

so why is it by and large a hanger queen? because of its poor dive? if some of the more knowledgable could weigh in i would appreciate it. maybe there is some fatal weakness that i am not seeing?

It does get a bit underpowered at medium and high altitudes.  A Spitfire only gets better up high.

Spit 16 is easier to handle, dives much better. But one of the main reasons why it is so popular: because it IS popular. Everybody who is interested in WWII aviation has heard about the Spitfire. Only quite few people did know about the Frank before joining this game. And new people tend to fly what all others are flying, too. They see a lot of Spits and think "wow, that MUST be a good plane"

It takes 5 minutes to learn the Ki84.

It takes 0 minutes to learn the Spit.

Guess which one most newbies want?

Shhhhhhhh!!!!!!  Quiet!!!!!

Ki-84     ENY = 15
Spit XVI ENY =  5

Spixteen kills Ki-84 = earns  0.3 points
Ki-84 kills Spixteen = earns  3 points.

1.25 modifier to each if you land the kill.

I'm not a great fighter pilot by any means, but I've got decent scores in general from avoiding anything with ENY under 10 (110G), and usually with ENY's of 15 to 35, most of the time.

JimBeam has a point, lack of pilot protecting armor is the biggest drawback, IMHO.  Pilot wounds take me out more than anything.

Like the Ki-61 too.  Oddly, the Ki-61 is a decent GV killer with it's bombs and slow firing cannon, if you want speed on the deck.  Hard to compete with Ki-61 in LW with splixteens and lalas everywhere, but there are a few that manage.  And it's ENY of 25 helps to make it a perk-o-lator ride.

Ki 84 does have armor but it's too light vs the allied ones.

I feel sorry for Ki-61s.  They're too underpowered to be competitive.  They can't compete with any of the main fighters for speed, and there's not a whole lot they can compete with for maneuverability, either.  Something like a Spitfire will eat the thing for breakfast, without salt.

Of course, as with its close contemporaries the Me-109E and P-40, in the right hands they can give you a surprise.  But I still feel sorry for the guy flying it (except when it's Bossk, then I'm amazed at how he does it).

J, the reason people tend to shy away from the Frank is because newbies never see anyone fly one so they think its a horrible plane. While they see 100's of people fly the spit16 so think its an awsome plane.
Also, the trainers (any myself) generally lean people towards the spit8 and spit16 as the plane to use because it is very easy to fly and get used to.
I find it to be the second most adaptable plane in the game, Great speed, Great climb, Above average guns, Great turning capabilities, rather horrible dive (450 compress).  While the spit8 has all of this minus the 450 compress thus making it the #1 plane in my eyes. But as some of you know, I refuse to fly spits, 51's, la7's, and nik's.

Happy flying hope to kill you soon    :aok

The P-51?  The P-51's the second hardest ship to fly in the game, I'd say.
