False Witness

It would seem to me that there should be a special place in the deepest darkest bowels of Hades for people who lie about doing heroic deeds.

My ex-brother-in-law is a prime example.

His wife had a collection of hats from Indonesia from her 1 year stint there as a missionary. They were displayed on her wall and were very nice. He insisted to her that she get rid of them. They were a horrible reminder of his days in the "nam". She complied and discarded the whole collection.

It turned out that the guy didn't even make it through basic. He was discharged for medical reasons and never served a day.

I have always been one of those guys who choke up at missing man fly-bys and all such tributes. I would love to be able to personally thank everyone who has truly served and paid the price physically or mentally or even just in time lost that could have been spent as a wayward youth.

Unfortunately there are just too many wannabes and outright liars in the world, and especially on the Internet.  No one wants to be the fool suckered in by a good story or a fantasy hero.

Lieing reduces the number of expressions of gratitude some people truly deserve.

And that is the real sin.

agreed.. the sin is against those who really do the hard work.   My boss is that way.. he had a few skin cancer thingies removed.. no big deal.. lot's of people in my family of scottish immigrants have to have it done but....  He calls himself a "5 time cancer survivor"  this is disgusting in light of what a real cancer survivor often has to go through..

He is also a vietnam vet.. he was talking about how important a good supply sarge is when being shot at...  He is 51 years old and was an officer in the Navy.. he went to 2 or 3 years of college before he got into the navy... I am not sure who was shooting at him in 76 or 77...   With his personality tho it could be anyone.

bummer that your sister-in-law had to endure a person like that.
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

in '76-'77?  the only shootings going were craps in the voids on duty evenings, perhaps whether or not he was standing watches.  :D

It's OK, I had to endure her sister for 10 years. It was an even trade.

Bit of black humour here, The Internet is a 2 edged sword, The hardest and possbily cruelest thing any has ever done to me involved my first wife.
You know when in your a relationship going south and it's not long before you have the "chat" and then it's a trip to the attorneys and then your in a motel or an apartment till the dust settles?
Well, she cleared the place out, left 3 black bags of mine on the floor, even took the mirrors on the wall, hangers, you name it., Didn't really care about the furniture or any crap like that. But I had 3 photo albums of my time in the service, I had a 8 x 11 wrtitten note from all the guys I had done some time with hanging up and some loose pics hanging around that I'd look at from time to time- gone- the F$$$$g lot of them, I didn't care about the 3 black bags left, or anything else that was missing, I just wanted them back.
Anyway, scroll forwards a few months, the "friend" she had met online turned out to be some F$$$g waster and so tried crawling back, Took great delight in telling her what I thought of that idea, Didn't make up for the missing pics but made me  feel like some sort of justice had been served.

There was a guy in the bar at the hyatt in Frisco on sat night, I went down for a few drinks as the wife was clogging up the room wuth Harispray and all the rest, you know how that works your ready in 10  mins and they take hours, Anyway, guys got some decent looking chick next to him at the bar, lines such as " just finished special training for Iraq, Sniper" thigs like this were coming out, seemed to be working for him as her eyes were lighting up and the hands started to get closer etc, I've always wondered why these guys go down the sniper, special training, fighter pilot route?
Anyway, he must have got lucky as they both took off shortly without finishing their drinks, so who knows?

I hear you MT. It reminds me of the time ...

I had been arrested two weeks before for obstructing logging in the Huichol's ancestral hunting grounds. I had taken a leave of absence from my regular job because, as my girlfriend at the time, Nicole Kidman, pointed out, I could do more good there than as starting point guard for the Lakers.

It was hot in that Mexican jail.

Damned hot.

The kind of heat that sneaks up behind you and throttles you in manner very similar to that employed by my cell-mate Fernando as he fumbled at his belt while hissing dark Spanish threats into my ear. I think he was warning me not to shout out for the guards, something that I would never do as our personal morality should never be forced on others. Then the pain came. I gritted my teeth and forced back the tears (or was it snot?). Homophobia is wrong, I told myself……

Both of my dad's wives did that to him.  He lost a lot of his medals (clean plate club, vietnam service, biggest smile in attention) when his first wife cleaned him out.  However she also took all of his father's medals which were actual medals from WW2 and some amazing service.  Stuff like bronze stars with clusters and I believe one silver star.  That pissed him off so much.

Then during his second marriage (my mother) at the end of it a lot of valuable stuff "dissapeared" during the divorce.  His mother's jewelry, valuable paintings...
