Difficulty downloading AH-help appreciated
« on: August 08, 2001, 07:56:00 AM »
HI guys, got new HD installed, modem working good (however there is a 2 min delay before modem connection window disappears, previously in my other HD, it would take seconds)...however, when I click to download AH it times out after about 2 min, telling me its unable to connect to "ftp://208.221.133.59/ah1073.exe".  I tried the alternate route via fd-skis ftp and it begins to download, but after about 1 hour it times out too.  I've tried several attempts over the last 24 hours and the results are the same.

Now, I tried this with another computer, and it instantly begins downloading from both addresses, so I'm not quite sure why it won't with my new system.  Win98 with critical updates is the OS.

Help is appreciated.

I might add, I have no problems downloading the terrains etc. from the webpage, its only the 1073.exe large file that 'chokes'.

You reloaded the OS right?  Have any resource conflicts?

For starters, what COM port and IRQ is your modem using, and are you using any of your on-board serial ports?  If so, what COM ports and IRQ's are they using?

Running a VIA chipset mainboard?  Got the 4.32 4-in-1's?

This is all dial-up your talking about right?

Actually Rip that 2 minute delay is not a real-live delay. In Dial-up Networking right-click on your connection and hit properties. On the Server Types tab you'll see a check-box called "Log on to network". Uncheck it and that long "delay" is gone! Annoyed me to death is all it did. Anyway, if you're using a Lucent Winblows Modem snag the 5.97 driver set. I've had a few "hiccups" with the 6.0 set, but for you they could work fine. www.808hi.com/56k/ltwin7.htm  is the place to snag 'em from.

Now for your network time-out thing. Control Panel > Internet. In the Connection tab you should find a connection time-out limit; set it for 20 minutes. Next, snag a download manager like GoZilla or Reget (www.reget.com) and dload AH that way. It'll temporarily get around the network timeout crap until you can hunt down the glitch and kill it.

No resource conflicts, updated modem driver to 6.00, still have the same problem, whats really weird is..I can download anything off the net, terrains, driver updates, etc. etc....its JUST this AH 1073 file that won't connect...I'm downloading reget jr. as we speak, will give that a try.

Ok Rip here's what you do with Reget. Once the download connect times out, pause the download for a few seconds then resume it. You'll get AH with no problems. I've had to do that before with mongo files and it's always worked.

Appears that Reget jr. is working with Fd-skis FTP mirror, time will tell (used to time out after an hour on previous tries)...I'll keep you posted (pun unintended)  :)

Whew! Starting to think that I was a real flunky!(okay, so I am...)

Appears to be D/L'ing fine with mirror site so far.

What does Reget do?  cut the d/l time down?

Also, can I D/L multiple files with Reget?  (I'm assuming so, it looks like the FE has that ability) and if so, will it slow down any/all the chosen downloading sessions?

It's a download manager. If that download times out (eg: goes dead) hit Pause, then hit Resume after a few seconds (looks like the Play button off a stereo). 99 times out of 100 it makes the server think there's a new download and resumes it. Your computer could crash, your modem could go apeshit, or the server could explode but that download won't be busted. You can resume it now, tomorrow morning, next week, or even next month! It'll download fine without a single glitch.

So remember: if (when) the download seems to stop for more than 30 seconds hit Pause. Wait ten seconds, then hit "Play" to resume it. You won't break the download. Worst case, you restart the system and resume it. Best case, the dang trick works!

Edit: Yeah, you can download 50 files at once with it. But since your modem limits your speed, you'd be lucky to get .0005k/sec with that many! What I do is get one download going and have a second one paused. Once the first gets done I start the second one. Takes me three seconds to hit the button, and there's no interuption or slow-down of the download.

Thks flak, will check it every so often.

Experimented with another D/L (Mindanoa terrain) but it seems its only interested in D/L'ing the big file for now...

No problem at all. There's other dload managers out there, but the good ones you have to PAY for. GetRight is one of those. Quite possibly one of the best managers there is, but it costs $30. Reget is free if you don't mind the Propaganda Banners and does what you tell it to. I've had my copy for around a year now and I've yet to have it FUBAR a dload. Whether the server cooperates or not is something ENTIRELY different though.  ;)
