Think about it, you ever see a tanker in a WWII movie saying "punching out" as he trips a big red handle that blows him up & out of his burning tank?

Tankers don't "eject"  Technically fighter pilots don't either, they "bail". Open cockpit, kick butt over the side (or roll plane upside down & fall out) then open chute.

I think the question is - why can't one exit from a GV and end up on foot, similar to being a downed pilot?

If you're in a burning panzer with no engine or turret, you can't exit the tank.

===

Also, why can't a downed pilot join a jeep? Maybe get a lift back to base as a passenger.

Because probably what happened more often was the crew was killed by that last shot, or knocked silly, or was roasted alive, or the internal ammo would "cook off".  Then your buddy in another  tank, or the enemy from his tank, would walk over and use his pistol to put you out of your misery, if you were still suffering.  The reason most tankers carried pistols, by some accounts, more than self protection.

hey, i like the troop pickup idea. I mean when i got shot down (and im downed alot), there always seems to be a jeep, M3 or somethin near me. I like the idea of 2 passengers in a jeep, 4 in a Lvt2, and 6 in a M3. I mean 3 M3's could bring a whole squad back to base and it would count as a sucsesful ditch if they landed safefly. I also like the idea of troops that ACTUALY SHOOT! it seems like troops carry the pistols for no reason. What are they gonna use them for?? Are they gonna play Russian roulette in the map room??

Several times I've used my pistol to kill enemy troops trying to take a map room. It works too. Talk about last ditch defense!

Anyway, if Jeeps, M3s etc. could pick up troops then we've got an argument for a Lysander, Storch and Grasshopper - planes which have no chance otherwise.

You'd only get one survivor from a burnt out tank, and presumably none if the tank blows up. But one survivor bailing out of a burning tank rather than the (gamey) waiting for for v. supplies sounds pretty cool to me. Though it means that Whels might even get to land more kills .
