AH makes my monitor squeal
« on: June 26, 2000, 01:53:00 PM »
After playing AH for a few hours, my monitor develops a high-pitched but low volume squeal.  If I alt-tab to desktop, the squeal stops.  It I exit AH and come back in, the squeal starts again when I enter AH.  I know its my monitor because I unplugged the speakers and it was still there.  Turned off my monitor and it quit.  My normal AH ound is still there, and the squeal is independant from AH sounds, yet it only happens when I'm in AH.
Is this a heat issue since it only comes on after playing AH for a while?  The sound drives me crazy and makes playing pretty annoying.  My Monitor is a "Samtron" 17 incher, and I run AH in 800 * 600.

Any thoughts?

There is obviously a mouse living in your monitor.  The tracers from Aces High make him very frightened and (s)he starts squealing.  What you need to do is get a large hammer, or preferably a mallet, and go into offline mode.  Then fire the guns constantly, until the squeal starts, taking careful note of its point of origin.  Using both hands to maximize the blow, strike the originating sound as forcefully as possible, and your problem should be cured.  If not, repeat.

MarkVZ,
it sounds more like the refresh rate on the monitor if you are runing at 800 X 600 try to bump the refresh rate up above 75 MHz
I asuume that the Desk top is other than 800 X 600 or it could be that the one of the crystals is starting to go bad

Thanks for the info Heater.
My desktop is 1024-768 and I'm running AH in 800-600.  My refresh rate is set to 85hz. I have another 17" monitor here on my old computer, so I hooked it up, and no noise.

I think I'll try Fatty's advice, gotta get this mouse out

Runs off to find hammer.....

Are you sure it's your monitor Mark?  My V770 Ultra squeals after it gets warmed up.  (They have a noisy fan on the TNT2 processor.)

Yeah Bloom, I'm almost sure it's my monitor.  When I turn it off it stops.  Also, when I tried another monitor, it never happened.  I guess it could be the way a certain monitor interacts with the card, but I'm not sure.  It's really hard to track down low volume-high pitched noises, so it could be the card.. a TNT2 model 64 32MB.
