Do not try this at home
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:15:14 PM »
I spent almost all of last night flying a Hurricane Mk I (8 .303's, an engine that cuts out under negative G's and a ENY of 40) and an F4F-4 (6 .50's, no WEP and an ENY of 30) in the LW arenas and had more fun than I've had in a long time (although I didn't do very well in the F4F from a kill standpoint I had some fun, extended, 1 on 2 fights).

I flew in a lot of outnumberd situations, got killed a lot but managed to get more kills than deaths and even landed a few.

to all the pilots in their elite rides that viewed me as an easy target for giving me such an enjoyable evening and for allowing me to successfully farm perks.

I've been doing this for about 2 years now.   Even before the Arena splits, besting "Uber rides" in a "POS" is more gratifying than landing 6 in an La7.

I just wanted to share one experience from last night that made this so fun for me.

I was fighting a N1K in the Hurri I, well, not so much fighting as avoiding his repeated passes from altitude.

Normally when you pull negative G's in the Hurri I the engine will cut out but it will re-fire on it's own once you're back under positive G.  However, if you pull negative G's too long, then it won't re-fire on it's own.

Such was the case when a fellow countryman flew by announcing on range; "BaldEagl, you've got a N1K diving on you".  I gave the stick a little twist to maintain some sort of evasive move while looking ahead at my motionless prop.  As I hit the e key hoping that I wasn't still pulling negative G's I replied; "OK, just trying to get my engine re-fired".

At that moment the N1K zoomed by without so much as a ping.  I thought, how cool is that!  Among all the other things you have to think of in the midst of a fight, how often do you have to think about re-firing your engine and listening to it sputter to life as your attacker zooms by.

From that point on it didn't matter if I won the fight or not, it was that one little thing that caught my attention and made me smile.  I don't even remember the outcome.

Exactly.

I've flown a bunch of different planes. But as far as a gratiufication factor.

Cant beat landing kills in 109 E & Fs, FM2s & P40s

and way to go!  It can be a bunch of fun to take up a "lesser" ride and sharpen the ole skills while having a blast.

I do have a comment though, and that's for Mussie.  As someone who flies the Hawg nearly exclusively, I don't really think you can quite class the -1A in the "POS" category.  It's a pretty competitive ride against even the perkies if you maintain your E-state.

Maybe I'm too familiar with her, but I think she's waaaaaaaaay underrated if she's being classed in with the Hurri or the P40.  I believe that any decent pilot should do reasonably well in her, as long as they choose their engagements with a modicum of common sense and avoid getting slow except against the most carefully chosen of opponents.

I love the cane1, I dont fly it much in LWAs because its so slow in comparison. But I have alot of fun with it in EW & MW. The guns are great, if you can leave them focused on 1 area. I equate them to a sandblaster- they just kinda wittle their way through......:D

Were you in that group with ROCKY and Qartr I was fighting against last night? I remember there being a HurriI there but don't recall the pilot.

I was flying F4F's and F6F's.

I couldn't tell you.  I spent some time in both LW arenas last night and some time fighting both Knights and Rooks but most was spent fighting Knights in LW Blue over the canyons on (I think it's called) Beta then moved to the Rook side fighting at an elevated base on the other side of the canyons.  Sidetracked to EW for a quick Spit V mission then ended up in Orange flying with an F4F-4, my last flight against a pair of Rook C.205's.

And she means "dark side" there's an all-black skin for the Mk.I and one in the works for the Mk.IIc as well.

(they probably won't make it into this skin pack though)

Nothing beats having a smoking, damaged P40B limping back home with 5 kills under the belt, with no ammo, half elevator, aileron missing and 1 vs 1 against LA7 who is gaining from behind. Not only that, the LA7 is piloted by a name pilot.

One desperate last moment scissor which blows every bit of E you have gained so far, you wait to get pinged..

..

Only to see the LA7 had too much E and lawndarted trying to get the easy kill. :D
