Author Topic: Reboots in GV (Read 355 times)

OK guys.. got my system completed.. works absolutely perfect! Much better than I expected. Framerates in the 50/60's consistently.. I did have one problem though.. my video card was getting way too hot (140+ degrees).. I installed the fan from my old processor onto its heatsink and now it stays under 100. As a matter of fact, EVERYTHING stays under 100 with the exception of the hard drive, at 102 consistently.

Here's my problem - Reboots while in a GV. I've tested it on the Panzer, LVT2, and M16 so far. Works fine for about 10-15 minutes, then the computer reboots.

I'm going to disable "reboot on errors" and get the useless error code next time it happens and go from there, just wanted to know if this is a common thing.

Processor - Conroe E6300
Video - Nvidia G-Force XFX 6200 256MB AGP8X
MB - ASRock
Memory - Two 1 gig sticks of DDR2

Nothing is overclocked.

I have the latest Nvidia non-beta drivers installed, but don't know the version number right now. I've seen posts about backing down to an older driver version, but don't know which one to look for.

I can fly and fight all day long with no problems, but it's rebooted everytime I've taken a GV for a ride unless it's a very quick sortie.

NOTE: I see what Skuzzy meant when he said he was nervous install his first 775 processor... I thought that metal level was going to break (well not really but you get nervous seeing that much pressure on the processor) but the install went smoothly and all-in-all is a pretty wild setup! Thanks to all for all the help on my previous post.

I thought temps were a bit high but I ran Everest on my system and thats about right. I'd guess that the graphics for GV stuff are overheating domething....it sounds like a heat issue. There are a bunch of test programs out there to stress overclocked VC's...I'd run one and see if it locks up on you there. No clue why you'd stress the VC if it was fine under old system....

For those who care, I think I found the problem. AH was getting a little "slow" in the arenas.. not many squadmates were on, so after about 4 hours playing I decided to install my old Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2-Pacific Theatre... computer would reboot everytime I took off in it.

Error code is 100000c5 - Driver issue.

I ran it with certain peripherals unplugged, and sure enough, without my LTB surround sound USB headphones it didn't happen.. so I stripped all of my sound drivers and reinstalled.

I haven't tested it yet since the reinstall (was getting late and I went to bed) but if the problem keeps happening I think it's either going to be a problem with the headphones, or a power supply issue.. voltages all look great, but it's only a 300watt.

I'll let you know.

I'm betting on a little of both. 300W is not what I'd recommend using a 6 series Nvidia card.

Very much agreed, doc1kelley.

For a Conroe with a 6k-series Nvidia card and that much DDR2? 300w doesn't even come close to cutting any mustard, and wouldn't dent Miracle Whip. For reference, the spec of my rig...

Conroe processors don't gobble up as much voltage as older ones. But the power requirement for a CPU is nil compared to a high-wattage video card. I knew when I built this thing a few years ago I'd need a high-wattage P/S to begin with. Especially since ATi requires 300w at the minimum before someone can even think of using a Radeon 9800. Now consider that a 6200 GeForce card runs a little faster than my Radeon, with the same minimum power requirement, and you're already in trouble. There's just enough juice for every component, but nothing extra to go around. To get out of this little mess you can either get a powered USB hub (very temporary solution) or bite the bullet and bag a power supply with a lot more horsepower. Personally, I'd replace it.

One thing I've never understood is just why someone would blow $1,500+ on a new rig, carefully research CPU, video, sound, HDD, RAM, and yet wind up with 1/2 to 2/3 the wattage needed. Especially since a good P/S with plenty of kick can be had for barely $50. Newegg has a 430w Antec TruPower II for $70 right now, $6.50 shipping. The 500w SmartPower 2.0 is the same.

Yes I do plan on a better PS before too long... but for now It's gotta do.

I uninstalled all sound drivers.. for both the headphones and my onboard... reinstalled them all and all works well now. I was in an M3 for 30 minutes with no lock-ups.

Also my FS game works fine now as well.

I figured out that I had beta drivers installed for the headphones before. I reverted back to the last "official" release. Only drawback is I only have 4 speaker effect instead of 6, so sound quality is a little less than before, but still acceptable.

PS.. I have an old BFG NV 6800GT AGP card laying around and the box states that the minimum power supply requirement for it is 300 Watts.

His power supply is not really a problem. There is no probably no rack system on the market that uses more then 265W of power. His system is probably under 200W max draw. The only real question is how many amps hs 12V rail supplies. That doesnt mean that getting a better more powerful PS isnt a good idea....simply that its neither neccessary or that his system is currently "at risk". In fact its probably the easist "party money" in a crowd of computer geeks. Just ask em how much PS they have then comment that there system couldnt draw 300W's under any load and let the bets roll in.........

I was wrong about the beta drivers.. they WERE official drivers.. it froze up again even after the driver reinstall.

Checked into it further.. and learned they were simply the incorrect drivers. LTB has since replaced my headphones with a newer model, and their website simply listed the model as "USB 5.1 Wired Headphones With Mic... CLICK HERE to download drivers".

Well apparently THOSE drivers are for the new model, not the old. By doing some detective work, I was able to get a file list of their "drivers" folder, and by looking at my purchase history from tigerdirect (to find the model number of the headphones I actually own, as it isn't stamped anywhere on the unit), was able to finally download the correct drivers... spent several hours in a GV since, and no more issues. I'm also able to re-enable 6 speaker sound, so I'm happy.

Just for reference, if any of you need to download drivers for the LTB USB 5.1 wired headphones with mic here's the deal:

If the volume control buttons are on the side of the headphones, just download the drivers from their website.

If the volume control buttons are on a separate box, in-between the headphones and the USB plug, they you have to find the drivers for model # LTB-USB-M... NOT the ones advertised on their website.
