Thinking about returning
« on: February 25, 2007, 07:47:22 PM »
I'm thinking about returning but I want to make sure my box is up to snuff.

I currently have a AMD 4000, 2 gig ram, and a 7900 vid card (not SLI)...

What is the very best setup out there for AH right now? Does AH benefit from Dual Core?

Any help is greatly appreciated...

I had an AMD 2200, 512MB Ram, and a much crappier video card and I still got 15-20FPS on AH...  not the best system, but still ran it sufficiently.

I now have a E6300 core-duo, 2GB ram.. and a better, but still sucky, video card... 55-65FPS, at max settings.

Basically that system should work fine for AH, but you'll probably have to stick with 512 textures.. not the end of the world.

And YES AH benefits from dual core.

Good luck.

What kind of dual core cpu would you suggest?

I have a socket 939 MB now, so using the same type CPU would be cheaper, but if the best performance would come out of say a AM2 type, I'm not above getting a new MB as well. I was looking at this CPU..

CPU

I have a Socket 939 San Diego 2.4 now... and I rechecked and I'm using a BFG 7800 GTX now. What is the hottest vid card right now that is reliable?

I'm also using a 520 watt power supply, will this be enough?

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Del , with the AM2 you would have to get a motherboard ,cpu and RAM because the AM2 boards and cpu's use DDR2 instead of DDR . By the time you do that , your better off going to the intel conroe.

The performance difference between AM2 and your 939 socket isnt that big, maybe 5-7%  . If i were you  I would look for an FX-60 , they are still around for the 939 and will drop right in most 939 systems . I just bought a X2 4400 AMD for my 939 and my upgrade went fine.

The 7800gtx is still a good card , i would wait and see how the cpu works out before i bought anything else .        38

BTW tiger direct has the fx60's newegg is out of stock.

Croweeeeeee :)

I was trying to reuse my old mofo ...  but I gave up. Building a new intel box from scratch soon with a conroe 6600.
