Question for Spitfire experts
« on: February 28, 2007, 10:12:28 PM »
I am going to try and convert my joystick to resemble a spitfire control column.  I was wondering if anyone knew the dimensions of the spade handle.  A friend of mine is going to use a cnc machine to try and make one for me.  First time using one so i think he just wants to make something LOL.  Anyway, I checked many sites(Including one of a guy making a Spitfire cockpit!) and sent out a few emails but no responses yet.  Just wanted to check here since many of you are top notch when it comes to this stuff.

What i am looking for is basically the diameter of the spade, and the thickness of the handle as well.  That's it, thanks guys.

I don't know, but I think that's awesome ... best of luck to you.  For what it's worth, I strongly recommend making it full-size.  You may want to build it from the potentiometers on up.  If you're really serious about it, you'll want to arrange a system of weights and balances to simulate the mass of the elevator.

Looked like some 4 inches to me when I peeked onto one cockpit. On the inside as a diameter that is.
Zou are aware that the top of the column bends to the sides right?
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Yeah, very strange I always thought.  I still do not understand how that would compare to say the typical control column.  Edit:  Actually, wrong word compare.  Rather why that was chosen over the typical control column.

As far as detail, this is my first attempt to I am going to basically make a column that i will attach to my saitek stick.  I stripped my saitek stick into pieces and it looks easy.  The wiring should be easy.  I will cut the wires and basically extend them.  I will keep the hat switch and the firing buttons and attach it to the spade handle to look HOPEFULLY a little like the Mark V's and up(I think)

I think it would look cool with a highly detailed spade handle though.  Ya never know though LOL.  I will send pics when it's done and let you guys be the judge.

I tried this years ago by extending the column of an old joystick and it worked nicely.  THis will just be a bit more complicated because I will be making a new grip.  If it does work and looks good I may think about doing a spitfire cockpit.  Who knows though.
