I think one problem many buff gunners have (including myself) is that tracers are much more misleading than in fighters. A bad buff gunner myself, I had many times a similar impression. My enemy just seemed to wade through my fire, my tracers seemed to be perfectly on target. The problem was: It only "seemed".
Tracers are even more misleading in buffs than in fighters, especially as the screen can give you no really depth perception. From my (gunners) point of view, the tracers are on target. Watching my films in external view centered on my enemy, I could see that in fact most bullets where missing my target by quite a huge margin, going over or under the target.
And an occasional .50 hit is usually not enough for a plane like the A8, that's why it is my fav buff hunting ride.
But to discover such knowledge, you have to develop a mindset where you don`t blame HTC/connection/enemy"hacker"/whatever every time you suffer a virtual death in this game
