Patent question

What does it take to patent something.
and how does one go about it?

I have an idea that might be worth looking into doing exactly that.

Submit it to the patent office and maybe get a lawyer to handle that legal stuff.  That's my best guess anyway, good luck.

its best to have a legal beagle type draw up the app ...

you can do it your self if you can speak legalnese . pay the fees and submit it .

Best advice is keep the idea to yourself til it gets approved ..this can take anywere from 6 mo. to 3 yrs .

I think it costs around $5000-$7000 to file a patent.

Probably one of those ending in .gov


I looked into the procedure briefly 25 years ago. I recall the fee was about $20,000. That's when I lost interest in filing a patent.

Its not as expensive as you think .. It cost me around 700 ea for 2 of mine , and 1500 for my 1st one .


It gets more expensive as per the more parts/pieces ect are involved and depends on the Research time involved.  yes some Pats can get up to 20k .

I didnt expect it would be free but 20K +??

Thats downright offencive and unfair.

At that kinda price they might as well pass a law saying that only big business is allowed to file for and hold patents

the price kinda goes on how much paper you send them ..

say you build a new mouse trap and theres 20 pieces /parts that you developed in the trap ... you may need to patent each and every piece . thats when the price starts climbing fast .

but there is the chance that you could sell it and make big bucks or royalties on your idea .


oh yea you need to find the current price list ,, that one i posted was from a couple yrs ago when I was developing some new parts

Don't forget the payment for the investigation to make sure there is no other patent similar, and so on...

thats where the REAL money goes, into that investigation, and research. well, that and the lawyers making the "official" patent legalese.


remember, there are SO many patents that making sure what you are submitting is unique and new is the HARDEST part.

Rich people and lawyers make all the laws and regulations.  Now, in all honesty, who do you think is going to benefit more from those laws and regulations?

There are ideas out there from improving gas mileage (over 200MPG, yes 200) to cutting costs of heating/cooling (1/5 the cost) a home which will never see the light of day due to the guys not having money to file the patents.

Inventors are just that.  They invent.  They suck at writting business plans and making presentations to potential investors.  So, unless you are already rich, you can just about give up on any idea which involves a patent.

I have known many brilliant people who will die poor and frustrated.  They have brilliant ideas.  Spend most of thie life trying to get enough money together to build a working model, and that is where it ends.  The model works, but no one cares.
